Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

your problem is the packet loss. Have you had a look at your power levels?

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

I am assuming you are using the shub in router mode. Go to http://192.168.0.1 and enter your username/pass (it is admin/changeme or the other way around, I cant remember). They have changed the GUI since I last used it but you need to click on something like a "connection" tab and "status" and it will listeach of the 8 downstream channels, the two upstream channels and what speed you are provisioned for.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

That's your problem dude, downstream power is way too low. You need to get an engineer out and move your tap point in the cab

Nah, I wouldn't say way too low. You can maintain a reliable connection with a stable -10 and technically the spec allows -15. -5.7 to -7 is actually well within optimal. Note the perfectly decent SNR and there having only been one single errorred packet on all channels combined.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

Wondering, is M going to get doubled (yes, I cling to BB:M, Phone:M, TV:XL + Loyalty untlil they prise the package from my cold, dead hands - unless something else comes up that really is too good to turn down).

Yes, M gets double to 20Mbit - basically it becomes exactly the same as L 20

This seems to be a point of confusion amongst various parties.

I've read that power levels shouldn't be lower than -3 and Swansea support have confirmed this to me. While my power levels were around -5, I had cause to call out two engineers. They both told me that -7 is perfectly acceptable and they both refused to raise them. Later my power levels dropped further to -7.5 or so yet my quality of service seemed as good as ever, fast download speeds of up to 7.4MB/s and none of the problems that I had been experiencing previously. I no longer worry about them.

Optimum is -3 to +6. As long as snr is good below that works fine

Thanks for the clarification. Both engineers did comment on the good SNR.

Alotof folk don't actually care about what speed they get, as long as it works

Indeed, if they did they wouldn't still be on 10Mbit

Also I'd expect quite a few don't want the hassle of, or wouldn't be confident in swapping the kit - no matter what it was they were sent.
