My apologies - I was just a little too full of cynical anticipation of watching England going out in the quarter finals, followed by 2 weeks of every newspaper dedicating the entire sports section to post mortem after post mortem, this leading to another week of telling us how the new England manager "is the new saviour", only for him (or her - you never know, perhaps the FA will get really desperate) to get sacked 2 years later for losing in the quarter finals of Euro 08 to some small tinpot country....
Oooops, there I go again

As I said earlier in this thread, the most annoying thing is that, while they'll be happy to print all their flags and stuff in May and June, who're they going to blame if the team balls it up becuase of all this crap going on? You can bet your house on the fact that they won't be taking the flak - they'll just find somebody else to blame. It's about time they shut up, and just got behind the team.

Well said Nugget
The NOTW seem to be on an anti-England world cup campaign at the moment. First it was Sven, now it's Sol Campbell.Who's next ? Frank Lampard, or maybe Steven Gerrard ? Hell NOTW !! why not take a pic of locals at a well known gay bar in London and superimpose the entire England teams faces on there. That way we can be home after the first week, and you'll get exactly what you want

I read this on the BBC 606 Board
"Apparantly Wenger dropped Sol for the Birmingham game because he did not want to see him chasing Butt on Saturday"

As a one-liner, it's not so bad in my opinion. But when you consider this is a matter which seems to be affecting a man's mental health, perhaps it wasn't the wisest thing to say.

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
Can I just ask - why is it that, if a footballer is gay, it should have any bearing whatsoever on his work? So what? What exactly is the difference between someone being gay, or someone being black, or left-footed, or whatever?
Again, I think that, if the NotW has a 'dossier' that they claim will out Sol Campbell as homosexual, what bloody difference does it make? Does it affect his ability as a footballer? Of course it doesn't! Quite frankly, I don't even see it as being a newsworthy story - so a footballer allegedly doesn't come out as being gay? I'd suggest that this would have more to do with the prevalent attitude within the game, and within sections of the fans. What business of anyone's is it, other than that footballer?

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
It shouldn't matter at all but the only other footballer I can think of who is openly gay was Justin Fashanu and the way that ended could put others off coming out.

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
We do not know what the NoTW has in its dossier for Sol. I am not quite sure whether he kept his life private. He had a high profile affair with the mature decorator and then another one with Dido. I have to see what NoTW has to say on the matter...
But the speculation is that Sol is seriously ill: he is either depressed and/or HIV positive. And one can be 100% straight and HIV positive...
---------- Post added at 14:19 ---------- Previous post was at 14:03 ----------
Sol's and Arsenal's solicitors have asked BBC to remove all messages that speculate about the player's sexuality. BBC did so. So, here is one of the first messages that came after the request and it do not break the rules:
"Is Sol Campbell a Lib-Dem?"

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
as someone said does it really matter.. at the moment the only gay footballer is Justin Fashanu and the odds alone on that being true show there must be more than just him.. it's what you do on the pitch that count not off it
as for the NOTW all they want to do is make money they don't care how

The Guardian says: Partner Kelly Hoppen has recently said she is in love with someone else and Campbell is said to be tortured.

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
If NOTW are really doing this I hope they eventually get sued for libel or just excessive invasion of privacy, I mean come on a footballer is gay is that real news. So what, I dont care in the slightest but what I do care about is NOTW news printing policy.

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
The paper said Sol Campbell went missing after the game against the Hammers funny I thought he went missing during it. I did not know about all these alleged skeletons in his closet, being a professional though you would have thought he would have gone to his manager and said he did not feel right instead of increaseing the preasure upon himself by turning in such an awful performance and then running off for three days.

Wait a minute - Arsenal have won away??
Wenger is said to be fuming. Still, perhaps we'll have more Highbury supporters in the thread now.
Not a bad start for United - 2 up within 14 minutes.
