It's back to the drawing board for the connections of Telescope after he could finish only second to David Livingston in the Betfred Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock.

The winter favourite for the Derby, Sir Michael Stoute's colt had to miss the Classic but appeared to be back on the right road after an easy success in a rapid time at Leicester.

However, despite Ryan Moore being the last off the bridle in the Group Three, he was outbattled in the straight by Mike De Kock's charge, who was previously trained by Aidan O'Brien.

Godolphin continued their domination of the German-Thoroughbred.com Sweet Solera Stakes as Ihtimal claimed the Group Three prize at Newmarket.

The last four winners of the seven-furlong race have sported the famous Godolphin silks and the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Ihtimal made it five in the hands of William Buick.

He went for home over a furlong out and while former Godolphin rider Frankie Dettori made a late challenge aboard Midnite Angel, the 11-4 favourite was two and three-quarter lengths too good.

Moonlight edges Marois thriller.

Moonlight Cloud held off the late thrust of Olympic Glory in a pulsating climax to the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.

Turning out just a week after her brilliant display over six and a half furlongs in the Prix Maurice de Gheest, the Freddie Head-trained mare was buried in behind rivals by Thierry Jarnet as she stepped back up in distance to a mile.

Once given her head a furlong down, Moonlight Cloud's acceleration quickly propelled her into a clear lead and the race appeared to be as good as over, but Richard Hannon's Olympic Glory, partnered by Frankie Dettori, really found his stride late on and the two passed the post virtually as one. After a tense wait, Moonlight Cloud was announced the short-head winner.

Sudirman takes command in Phoenix

There was a shock result to the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh as red-hot favourite War Command could finish only third behind David Wachman's Sudirman.

The Coventry Stakes hero was sent off the 2-5 favourite for the Group One contest, but with Mick Channon's Ambiance setting a fierce pace, it was clear a long way from home that he was in trouble and Joseph O'Brien was hard at work from well over a furlong out.

Sudirman, winner of the Railway Stakes over course and distance in late June, was a 4-1 shot in the hands of Wayne Lordan and moved sweetly throughout. Railway runner-up Big Time came to challenge his old rival in the closing stages, but just as he had done 43 days earlier, Sudirman held on by half a length.

Olympic Glory is likely to have another crack at Group One glory following his narrow defeat in France on Sunday.

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot and the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp are to be considered for the Sheikh Joaan Al Thani-owned colt after Richard Hannon's charge got within a short head of Moonlight Cloud in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.

"The only way that Sunday could have been any better was if Olympic Glory had won, but he has run an absolute corker," the trainer's son and assistant Richard jnr told www.richardhannonracing.co.uk.

Dawn Approach is reported to have scoped badly after his defeat in the Prix Jacques le Marois and is being treated with antibiotics.

The Jim Bolger-trained, Godolphin-owned 2000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes winner was eased by Kevin Manning once his chance had gone in Sunday's red-hot Deauville showpiece and eventually finished fifth.

The New Approach colt was running just 11 days after going down narrowly to Toronado in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.

Telescope will aim to bounce back from his Haydock disappointment in the Neptune Investment Management Great Voltigeur Stakes at York on August 21.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt was a leading fancy for the Derby during the winter months but never made the Classic after meeting with a setback in the spring.

He returned with a scintillating display in a three-horse race at Leicester and was a hot favourite to win the Rose of Lancaster Stakes last Saturday but, despite travelling well for most of the race, Telescope only stayed on at the same pace behind David Livingston and he will now be stepped up in trip to 12 furlongs.

Richard Hannon could yet be tempted into running Toronado against Al Kazeem in the Juddmonte International at York next week - admitting rider Richard Hughes wants to have a tilt at the 10-furlong showpiece.

The High Chaparral colt was a leading ante-post contender for the Derby heading into the winter but has proved himself top-class at a mile this season, beating Dawn Approach in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Roger Charlton's five-year-old has been one of the success stories of the season with wins in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, Prince Of Wales's Stakes and Eclipse and he will aim to add another Group One to his growing list of achievements.

Richard Hannon has left in Sussex Stakes winner Toronado, who would be stepping up to 10 furlongs for the first time if he is allowed to take his chance.

Gordon lords it over Desmond rivals

Gordon Lord Byron took full advantage of the absence of Darwin to win the Desmond Stakes at Leopardstown.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Darwin would have been a warm order but was taken out following a change to ground conditions with rain at the Dublin venue.

Tom Hogan's Group One-winning stable star was dropping to Group Three company but was also having a rare run over a mile, although he was fourth in the Hong Kong Mile in December.
