we have that problem in store, if we do a line check it just comes up with an error, something to do with the BT site the talktalk site is connected too aparantly. I did find a way around the checker though by using a next door neighbours number to do the check then use the proper number to do the prosess, weather it will work or not remains to be seen.....

I think it is more to do with if you have transferred your cable number to BT.

They can take cable customers, they just can't take them 'directly' a la BT customers.

Depends how you define professional. I don't think there's anything wrong with a dose of refreshing honesty.

Re: [Merged] Car Phone Warehouse BB
I suppose, but then if that was the case and such an issue, then it kind of shows up their network.

Bad statement then I guess, they could have just said cable customers cannot do orders for the free broadband until they have a BT line fitted and then order with that.

Even if they have that it still wont work, doesnt work on our systems. the only way around it is to move from ntl/whoever, and have a bt line install AND have a new number with that line instead of the old ntl one. Even if the number has gone BT>NTL>BT, it still doesnt work

Re: [Merged] Car Phone Warehouse BB
having a new number I would consider the norm rather then exception tho. Well at least from people I know.

Not really, when you consider how much you are paying it isn't that surprising that they aren't prepared to allow huge amounts of usage.
In addition to this you'd be surprised how many ISPs traffic shape. While PlusNet is the most famous they certainly aren't alone.
I don't really see an issue with it, they provision a certain amount of bandwidth for each customer and give usage caps and shape traffic accordingly. If you plan on hammering the service it's fairly clear this isn't the ISP for you.

Re: [Merged] Car Phone Warehouse BB
The way the uk market has been going and inevitbly will go following the talk talk offer it is clearly going to be dictated by low usage customers. More and more products just go down price wise and the isp has to keep cutting costs to stay profitable. I still think carphone warehouse have wrecked uk broadband with this move and that 40gig cap will need shaping with it if they are to handle demand.

Re: [Merged] Car Phone Warehouse BB
They're just offering a product to fill a niche.
Sorry but the geek dominated days of broadband service are very much over now, and it's all about the price for most. Higher cost and quality services will exist of course, but the mass market is where the money is. Nerds running entire datacentres from their home connections and downloading the internet just aren't what ISPs want from their customers.
Been going that way for a while (Plusnet being the most noticeable example, prices dropping, shaping and capping, breaking from the previous 'enthusiast' market to becoming a full on pile high, sell cheap, mass market provider).

Re: [Merged] Car Phone Warehouse BB
I would forget the broadband side of things and look at the cost comparison between NTL and Talk Talk for a telephone service. NTL charge £25 per month for a telephone line and Talk Unlimited 24 whilst Talk Talk charge £20.99. It makes sense for any NTL telephone customer who wants a 24 hour unlimited call plan to move to Talk Talk. Even more sense if you regularly make calls to any of the international areas that Talk Talk give you free calls to.
It appears that Talk Talk is less expensive than NTL for telephone service no matter what your calling pattern is. With NTL my cheapest option is the 5p plan for my usage pattern. Talk Talk option 2 is the nearest match to that NTL plan. Line rental per month is the same for both (only for the first 12 months with Talk Talk but you can reassess your needs at the end of that 12 month period). With Talk Talk though the evening and weekend calls are free rather than NTL's 5p and other calls are cheaper with Talk Talk as well as them having discounts for your most called numbers and no connection charge, just a 5p minimum charge when the calls are chargeable. Persuading my most called numbers to also move to Talk Talk will also mean that all calls between them will be free 24/7.
It's a no-brainer really, if you have NTL telephone then move over to Talk Talk. Having NTL TV may be the stumbling block for many as you must have the NTL telephone line but you can always consider whether NTL is the best TV provider for you.
We don't know how the Talk Talk broadband will shape up with all the interest being shown in it. Personally I would move the telephone to Talk Talk and keep NTL for broadband until such time as we know more about the reliability of Talk Talk broadband. That way you can have two broadband services available to you so that you can switch between them if one is suffering issues. It is also ideal if you have more than one computer or wish to change IP's for any reason.

I think the "you have to have our telephone line to have our DTV" rule will either make Ntl or kill it. Forget all this crap about quad-play, it seems this is the chosen battle ground now.
Customers will either not switch because they want Ntl DTV or they'll dump DTV from Ntl and switch suppliers.
It's all hangs on how well Ntl execute the running of the DTV side of things. With the lack of any signs of movement on a PVR or HDTV at the moment I know how most people on here feel about their cable TV!
Life and death all on how well they run their DTV - oops
