A cynic might think it's a ploy to smoke out undecided MPs who might want to be on the "winning" side.

Re: Liz Truss Resigns [Who'll be the next Prime Minister?]
Johnson's campaign has to say that so it seems a fait-accompli. Again his whole thing is that this is the man who wins, the man with momentum, he can't go around desperately trying to get 100 of his own MPs.

The prospect of a second coming for Johnson, will probably see Starmer in Number 10 by December, if he really has 100 backers, he’ll win via membership vote, meaning Sunak element of the parliamentary party, backs Labours vote of no confidence, when he calls one. I’m surprised some of you are happy to accept Sunak, you don’t get your early election dream, via this path.

Breaking news: Johnson drops out of leadership contest.
Quote:
Boris Johnson has announced will not stand for the Tory leadership.
He is saying that despite having the support of the MPs required to run, he had come to the conclusion "this would simply not be the right thing to do" as "you can't govern effectively unless you have a united party in Parliament".
He says he had the backing of 102 MPs, the BBC's Political Editor Chris Mason reports.

That’s no early election then. More chaos under the same umbrella.

I don't accept Sunak, I just prefer him ahead of Johnson which is a really low bar. I would prefer Penny Moudant over the both of them but not sure she has a chance.
But he is gone anyway.

I wonder if Johnson’s supporters will transfer to Mordaunt, to make it a two-horse race, rather than a fait accompli?

Now does Penny Mordaunt get his supporters in order to stop Sunak and win me my bet?

Re: Liz Truss Resigns [Who'll be the next Prime Minister?]
Considering Truss has been a dead woman walking since the disastrous mini-budget, I don't believe for a minute that Johnson flew back from a holiday to think about whether to run out not.
The bullshit has been off the radar all weekend and it'd have been an utter embarrassment to have a reveal tomorrow.

I'd expect at least some MPs - regardless of who they support - to believe in the principle that the membership should decide.

Nor do I.
The proposition that he is clean, against a soiled Johnson (that phrase is disturbing) is laughable.
Sunak has moral authority over Johnson, I would argue the counter point. I haven’t seen BoJo stab anyone in the back. His sin has been defending a lost cause more than anything else.
