Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Well if it's any consolation to those of you still waiting my upgrade has resulted in a fairly stable service. I am receiving a steady 9.5+Mb downstream and 470+Kb upstream...( well unless I hit the stm ) so maybe you will find it's worth the wait.

Keep checking back to this thread and if you do get your upgrade don't forget to let everyone know. Oh and feel free to have a moan if it helps, we know what it's like to wait in the dark.

I've had a steady 10MB for a couple of weeks here in Grimsby and it's worth the wait. You'll notice the difference when streaming videos (much faster) and downloading patches and files.

Apart from the first few days after the upgrade, when my connection was a bit spotty, I've been quietly impressed. Plus the upgrade was free. The only downside was Virgin announcing it in February, then only upgrading me in August (although some are still waiting). It's the waiting that was the worst part, but remember, once you've got it, you've got it.

In SW London too. Still nothing. In my modem log, it shows SW Download INIT - Via Config file cm-4096-384, then SW upgrade Failed after download - Incompatible SW file. Is this the modem rejecting the speed upgrade? Should I call Tech Support? Or am I clutching at straws....

TIA

Phil

I got the same thing more or less a few days back, don't know whether it means anything at all. I'm on the old Surfboard 3100

SW Download INIT - Via Config file cm-4096-384
Attempting Unit Update
Motorola CM certificate required
Missing CM Cert Upgrade TLVs.
CM Cert Upgrade Enabled. Initiate via SNMP
4-Error X501.28 Unit Update - Not updating. This image is not for this platform.
4-Error E107.0 SW Upgrade Failed after download - Incompatible SW file

Nah, it's just a firmware update for a different modem being sent to it. Means nothing.

That modem is rather old and tired, and not truly capable of keeping up with the faster speeds now available, they had 512kb when that was issued, ring Tech Support on the number below and get it swapped.

Motorola 3100
From October 2000 Customers could also use the Motorola 3100. It is Docsis only (so will not work reliably if at all, on the parts of the network that use Eurodocsis). The 3100 models was Ethernet only, and Motorola soon introduced a model with USB as well, the 4100 (see below).

The Motorola 3100 does not support 10 or 20Mbps Tiers of Service

Tech Support is open 24/7 on the numbers below.

For help with your TV or Phone and for Broadband Technical Support:

Call Product Support/Faults on 151 option 3 from your Virgin Media Phone. It's absolutely free.

Or call 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.

Thanks for your concern. I am very aware that it won't support the higher speeds and was originally signed up for VIP but due to a mix up was put on XL + and was still promised a new modem. When it didn't turn up after the second time of ringing I just thought screw it and took them up on the offer of sorting everything out and on some weird hybrid package. If anyone else out there is in the same position and has an ancient modem dating back to (Jan 2001 in my case) try and get a new modem. I've been waiting for the upgrade before ringing up, you've persuaded me to get off my arse and do something about it sooner .

Got upgraded to 10Mb last week. Really pleased with my speeds (9.1Mb so far for over a week). Well worth the wait. Thanks Virgin Media

Nothing in Telford. Have any regions been upgraded since the last update on the schedule (12 Aug) i.e. are VM still beavering away, or have they been putting their feet up?

Nothing here in South Yorkshire, the internet has been unusually unstable around here, so maybe they are up to something.

Yeah, unstable speeds here in Solihull. The CF speedtest sometimes jumps between 380kB/s and ~550kB/s.
