Netgear wgt624 v3 dropouts?

Dear all,

I've just got a Netgear WGT624 (v3) wireless router to allow me to use a new laptop wirelessly with my Blueyonder cable broadband and to share files and printers with the desktop PC.

After a fair amount of heartache I've got the internet working on both machines but the wireless seems intermittent and file/printer sharing is a nightmare.

On the front of the Netgear router the 'i' symbol (just left of the '1') is constantly flashing on and off at a rate of about 8/sec (best guess!) whilst the wireless symbol to its left flashes on and off at varying rates but generally about 2/sec although sometimes it stays either on or off for several seconds at a time. I also get occasional messages saying the connection is lost or some such thing.

Whilst trying to sort it out I have the laptop and desktop on the same desk with the wireless indicating excellent reception. Even with the laptop in the opposite corner of the house it still reports very good reception.

Is the router supposed to behave in this way?

Slightly off topic but....

The router is placed between the cable modem and the desktop PC with the PC connected by cable to position 4. The laptop is connected wirelessly (g). Should I be trying to set up a wireless or normal (wired) network between the 2 computers and the router? Is the wizard in Windows XP the best way to go about this? I tried it this afternoon and all I manged to do was kill the internet sharing - costing me the last couple of hours to get it back.

Many thanks for any help.....

Kev
