Help needed to set up internet connection

Help! I know I'm not a techie, but this has really got me flummoxed and I am in need of help with something that is probably so simple I will hang my head in shame!

I am out of the country, and am on a friend's laptop. It has a permenent broadband connection, which is great. However, I have brought my own laptop in the hope that I can go online and continue with stuff that I was working on back in the UK. But I can't get it to connect!

Is there anyone patient enough to tell me how I go about setting up a new connection on my laptop? I can check settings etc on the one that does work if that helps.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Help needed to set up internet connection

OK, this is where my lack of knowledge becomes evident...

It's not USB, it plugs into the network connection type socket. And I don't think it's cable broadband, but can't be sure. How do I tell?

Poland, Warsaw. The provider is a smal private one called (I think) "Internet i Media". Sorry to sound so vague.

Re: Help needed to set up internet connection

What does the ethernet cable plug into? An ADSL modem, STB, cable modem, wall socket?

Any ethernet connection would normally be picked up automatically by Win XP (assume its that). What does 'Network Connections' say about your LAN connection?

The only obvious problem I can think of is the ISP connection being tied to the MAC address of the PC. Did you turn the modem/STB off for a minute before plugging in your lappie? It might be the same as the NTL STB's - need to register each new PC, in which case you need the info that came from his ISP.

HTH

Re: Help needed to set up internet connection

OK, there does not appear to be a modem, as the cable goes straight through the wall.

I am using Windows XP. In "Network Connections" it did mention the LAN connection, I think it said "Connected", but I could not get anything via Internet Explorer or AOL, or anthing else.

If I need to register the laptop, how might I do that? Thanks again for the help.

Re: Help needed to set up internet connection

At the command prompt you could try the following :

ping www.bbc.co.uk

and/or

tracert www.bbc.co.uk

These should verify whether you can get out on to the net.

If these don't work you need to get info from your mate/his ISP

Re: Help needed to set up internet connection

Right, it ooks like it is the PC recognition problem. Someone is going to look at it shortly but seems to think it's a simple thing to fix. Thanks for the help anyway.
