BBC3 coming back?
https://www.theguardian.com/media/20...y_to_clipboard
Quote:
BBC Three could return to broadcast television in some form, four years after the youth-focused channel became online-only in an effort to save costs.
BBC insiders confirmed that discussions had taken place on whether the brand should once again have a presence on traditional television but said no final decision had been taken.
A spokesperson said a report in the Daily Mail that suggested a return was on the cards was “speculation”, but did not rule it out.

Re: BBC3 coming back?
If they bring it back they should rename it BBC USA and dedicate it to quality US tv shows. How about doing re-runs of Vampire Diaries and Dexter? I could make them a nice long list of quality series which ended years ago and must be cheap enough to get hold of now.

Too much of that stuff on other channels surely. The licence fee is mainly for the BBC to make/commission new programmes, which they mostly do well.

I don't know which channel Dexter was on in the UK but I watched every episode and I don't think that would work on BBC. Vampire Diaries would but it is all about right issues too. It isn't just about oh lets air this show.

they don't even try. They are supposed to be saving a gazillion pounds due to budget cuts yet they are trying to resurrect another channel. If you want to bring back something which has failed you need to try something different in order to make it successful, you can't just keep having multiple channels of the same drivel. If they truly want to cater for everyone, which they should be considering everyone has to pay the license fee, then they need to offer better quality tv. If Sky can bid for series on Sky One, Sky Atlantic, Sky Witness etc and Syfy can buy the rights to series, Fox/FX, CBS and all those other channels then the BBC can too. They managed with the X-Files, Buffy and Star Trek back in the 90s, they just need to think bigger.

Are you prepared to pay bigger? Let the BBC be about new distinctive programmes, not repeating others output.

I pay more than enough as it is considering I literally don't watch it at all. Just as Sky has different bundles for movies, sports, documentaries etc, if you are going to be forced to pay what essentially is a monthly subscription for a tv service I should be able to say whether I want BBC, Netflix, Amazon etc. It is pathetic. When you put the two side by side the BBC are like a 3 year old child playing make belief and pretending to do what the gown ups are doing (Netflix and Amazon) if you want to assert they are trying to produce quality programming.
You are not forced to give money to McDonalds if you don't like it and choose to eat at Subway instead so it baffles me how everyone can be forced to prop up a cack tv provider.

I think you are proposing the BBC be like any other channel. But it's a public sector broadcaster. Providing programmes and services others don't do, as they aren't profitable. Choice is good, but we need to cater for everybody, even those that love Antiques Roadshow (which I don't), or Gardeners World (which I do). Drama wise it creates/commissions some of the best UK output. Programmes others daren't make/take a commercial risk with.
I can see this degenerating into yet another licence fee thread !

Na, i'll stop now. I just wanted to point out the contradiction of cost savings and reopening a channel. A few months when there was all the stink about budgets and funding the tv license for OAPs they said services would have to reduce, not increase.

It's not necessarily the contradiction it first appears. The BBC still has to make BBC3 programming because it is charter-bound to cater for that target audience. However if it has evidence that delivering it online reaches substantially fewer of the people it's made for, then they have a cost effectiveness problem. The BBC also already owns a shedload of broadcast technology and infrastructure and has the expertise in house; it's not even clear that they would have to rent transmitter or transponder space in order to bring BBC3 back because they always have some in reserve. The additional cost in absolute terms is minimal, and the cost per viewer is possibly actually lower.

The BBC might not be everybody's cup of tea as people are entitled to their opinion but the BBC is the glue of the nation bringing people together with its sports coverage and landmark dramas and documentaries.
It also reflects the UK’s identity and is a important cog in the economy.
