Personally i dont think the encryption would drop you down to 8mbps, as already recommended above;

- Check the channels of neighbouring wireless networks, then use one that isnt being used.
- Remove all G devices from the network (while you test) this should give you an indication if this is effecting your speeds.
- Home setup is always an issue, but a rule of thumb would be to place the router as centrally in the house as possible, staying away from outside walls, router antennas are omni-directional. Note that it should also be kept away from the floor and metal objects (e.g. filing cabinets)

Channel number can be very odd. I used to run at channel 13 to ensure (nearly) I'd be away from others but now use channel 1 as I got a huge speed increase switching to that number. It maybe to do with how some channels can be handled differently. This was on recommendation from vendor (Belkin).

Something I've noticed. Any wi-fi connected device closer to the router than you will get more bandwidth. Even inches different.

As for encryption, it's in flight and shouldn't be an overhead.

my experience of wireless is that wpa1 noticebly slows it down but wpa2 runs as fast as unencrypted. wpa2 on proper hardware should be hardware accelerated.

Moved to Networking as it's nothing to do with the modem

Attenuation of the signal will drop it down and give you a lower SNR. It's the SNR that degrades the recieving capability and then forces the system to renegotiate a lower speed (lower speeds are less suscepitble to errors due to the bit length being longer)

The speeds the OP quotes are they the synced speeds or speeds using a test site/program?? If the first then you'll need to possibly try different channel/position/encryption combinations, if the latter and the sync speeds are showing higher then it's bottlenecking somewhere
