Netgear WRG614 weak signal

My wireless signal is only 2 bars despite being within 3 ft of the router. If I go out of the room it drops. Friend with laptop had same problem. I have tried changing channels to1, 2, 6, 11 and Auto on the router but this makes no difference. Firmware updates failed, maybe because it was Virginmedia supplied. A call to VM technical and they just wanted to prove they were delivering the bandwidth. Suggestion of disabling firewall made no difference. Am I being fobbed off? Do I need a new router? Was considering Wireless N but strapped for cash! No apparent interference from other sources. Digital phone removed from room etc. I'm so fed up!

Re: Netgear WRG614 weak signal

I use the netgear 614 v7. It covers my whole house & delivers a good signal, app 80%. It would seem your router is very weak. Have you tried a different dongle / wireless card / laptop?

How long have you had it?

Hi thanks for the reply. I've just got onto VM again and they are sending a new replacement, so fingers crossed. Your reply has given me hope!

Re: Netgear WRG614 weak signal

You can get a weak signal even being right next to a router. I can't remember why off the top of my head. I just remember that being right next to it causes some problems.

What's the signal like if you go into another room, or just simply further away?

Re: Netgear WRG614 weak signal

It drops completely if I go out of the room. I know that there is a minimum distance you need to be. I have tried the router in another room (after connecting a extension etc) and it gives the same result. My friends laptop reacts the same way to my connection.

Make sure the aerial is screwed in firmly and is vertical.

Re: Netgear WRG614 weak signal

You are connecting to the correct wireless network and not someone else's?

Re: Netgear WRG614 weak signal

Thanks for the replies. Sadly I would get a much better signal if I connected to my neighbours' instead of my own. VM are sending a replacement router so we'll see what happens!

Re: Netgear WRG614 weak signal

Thanks for everyone's advice. A new replacement router solved the problem.
