Cable modem and homeplug - help

My PC is connected to the free modem supplied by NTL/ Virgin media upstairs and and I'm trying to connect my PS3 (which is downstairs) using homeplugs so that I can connect online via my PS3. I'm not a big fan of the wireless router.

I bought homeplugs thinking that it was a simply 'plug and play' effort. However, the home plug needs to be connected by an ethernet cable and I only seem to have one ethernet cable slot in the modem and this is attached to the PC box.

What do I need to buy so that I can have another ethernet cable slot for the homeplug at the PC end? Is it a router? If so, can anyone recommend a suitable and not too expensive router that is compatible with the cable modem and 200mbps homeplug?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Re: Cable modem and homeplug - help

yes, you will need a router if you connect that to the modem directly (this will then allow you to connect multiple devices trust side of the modem for internet access). if you just wish to add addtional ports for trust side only (then share internet connection via PC), you can use a switch.

Re: Cable modem and homeplug - help

Thanks for that.

Will any router work or are only particular ones compatable with both a cable modem and 200mbps homeplug?

Re: Cable modem and homeplug - help

you just need to make sure you get a cable compatible router, not ADSL

Thanks! Will google search a cable compatible router, though if anyone has any recommendations, would be appreciated!
