Networking problem

Hoping you can help with my current dilema.

Cable modem is connected to a linksys 4 port router (BEFSR41 V3.1) to this is an 8 port hub which connects 3 PC's up stairs and 1 in the front room. All is working fine.
I brought today a linksys WRT54G2 V1 wireless G router. This was brought to act as a wireless access point for the laptop. The WRT54G2 will sit down stairs connected to the 8 port hub. I know I do not use the WAN port.
I connected over ethernet to LAN1 and ran the installation disc. While connected to ethernet I can access the other PC's on the network but if I disconect the ethernet although the laptop can see the WRT54G2 it will not connect to it or the net (obviously)

My question is, how do I configure the WRT54G2 to be used solely as an access point. Bearing in mind bot the router and the WRT54G2 share the same 192.168.1.1 ip.

Make sure that you have DHCP turned off (or have both routhers DHCP'ing different pools) on the 2nd router and also change the default IP on the 2nd router to another IP (e.g. 192.168.1.2)

This is how I stand at the moment.

Wireless router is connected to switch > connected > router > modem

From the laptop I can connect to net through ethernet (on the lappy now) and I can ping all other computers on our network, so everything is all hunky dorey and its acting as a wired access point.

Changed the IP as you said.
On second router changed the default from gateway to router (as it states in the limited litriture)
laptop can see router throught wireless but wont go through to rest of network and beyond.

Got it sussed at the mo (I hope)
It seems that you need to connect using the Acer Epower thing and also connect to the network using the linksys thingy too.

Just remember that all the DHCP should be done from the original router as it'll set the gateway and dns address correct for the internet access.

Why would you even bother with all that.
if you have 4 pc's they all can be connected to your new router. job done.

Modem, main router and hub are in the bedroom all PC's are in the bedrooms and there is 1 cat5e that goes from bedroom to front room with about 5ft of cable in said room.
Wife like to use laptop downstairs but is restricted to where she uses it so I brought this wireless router to act as an access point so she can roam downstairs if she so wishes and also when not in use it can be switched off without interfering with the rest of us. Also it adds to what I can and am learning about networking which isnt much at the moment

Assuming there is a good reason for having two routers and a switch, connect the new router to the old router (or switch) via an enet cable into the Wan port and just use the factory defaults - the new router will get a 'wan' dhcp address from the old router (just as it would from the modem) and will supply it's own dhcp addresses to the wireless devices. (As a purist, you could always set the new router to have a 192.168.2.x address range.
However, Jonny is kind of right - why not just replace the befsr41 with the wrt54g as the only router - you can still use the switch plugged into one of the LAN ports on the wrt54g.

Ahh I see, I was under the impression that you couldnt connect the 2nd router to the first using the WAN.

As to why not go down the road Jonny mentioned. Well simple really I dont want a wireless device in the bedroom 10ft from where I sleep and directly next to where I sit at the comp. Just how I feel I spose. Would much rather have it 25ft and a couple of walls and a floor inbetween. I got me one of those tin foil hats too

All sorted now. Now I have taken back the Linksys and exchanged it for a Belkin range extender\access point which works a treat, should have paid the extra £6 at the time and save myself hours of trying to get the Linksys to work.
