Re: Linksys Router

Both are likely to work fine.

the GL is designed to be flashed with your choice of firmware (the software running on the router). For the computer expert who likes playing with stuff that can be a nice feature as yo umay be able to tweak settings to make it run better for things like torrents.

the GS is speedstep. In theory wireless will be faster, although to see a proper benefit your computer also needs speedstep enabled wireless adaptors. The current GS series routers can't be flashed with third party firmware.

Re: Linksys Router

Not sure about the new styling, but yes it looks like the replacement.
Can't offer any personal experience but there is a lot on the Amazon.com US site, suggesting it is good but has some range issues. I would give it a go, unless you have very thick walls or a very large house.

I've got a GS, the GS linksys cards are rubbish. BTW you can also flash the GS, i run the DD-WRT firmware.

Re: Linksys Router

You can flash the early versions of the GS, but version 5 and later may not accept the third party firmware flashing as the onboard memory was I beleive reduced. That was one of the reasons for the GL coming into existence.

Re: Linksys Router

i believe you can flash version 7 of the GS, so not sure what the restriction is

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php...d_til_today.29

i think you have to use the micro firmware as opposed to the full firmware

Re: Linksys Router

I bought a new WRT54GS from MicroDirect last week. I ended up returning it, because:
1) The picture in their catalogue showed it as a dual aerial router, and its actually a single aerial router.
2) It won't accept anything other than the official Linksys firmwares now.

They had to take it back, as the description didn't match the actual product sold, they tried to refuse saying the change was a purely cosmetic one. I argued that the loss of an aerial was more than cosmetic, even if the circuitry inside was the same. They eventually caved in and took it back
