Quote:
When the internet was developed in the 1980s, programmers had no idea how big it would become. They gave each address a †œ16-bitââ‚Âà ‚¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ number, which meant that the total number of available addresses worked out at about four billion (2 to the power of 32).
But as use grew, it became clear that the old protocol, IPv4, wasnââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t big enough, so a new one was written based on †œ32-bit numbersââ‚à ‚¬Ã‚ÂÂ. That increased the number of available addresses to 340 undecillion, 282 decillion, 366 nonillion, 920 octillion, 938 septillion ††enough for the foreseeable future, Mr Kessens said.

Well we can all breath a sigh of relief then.

IPv6 - been around a long time now, I did a course on it in 2002.
Not all the theorectical addresses will actually be used (just the same as the current IPv4).

Yeah, that's what I thought... the Times article says it's a new protocol, guess their definition of new ain't exactly the same as mine and yours

Does this mean it will be even more difficult to "catch" spammers?
About 100 nonillion times more difficult, if my maths is correct.
My calculator just broke...

Bad article from the times there, IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses, IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses.
