SB4100 Rebooting after firmware upgrade

Hi all,
this problem was 1st reported in another thread here, but it wasnt on this topic.

Since my line was upgraded to 10Mb and I received a firmware upgrade for my SB4100 from NTL I have been suffering from strange modem reboots.

Checking the logs gives this info
Code:
HFC: T4 Timer Expired
Received Response to Broadcast Maintenance Request, but no Unicast Maint
Received Async Error Range Failed
HFC: Shutting Downstream Down
*** BOOTING *** SB4100-0.4.9.4-SCM02-NOSH
Then it reboots.

The strange thing is this only happens on a few websites, and when it does happen I can reproduce it 9/10 times.

The url in question for me and one other user is
http://bbc.co.uk/weather/

Even stranger is that http://bbc.co.uk works fine.

Has anyone else had this problem? Post the sites that give you problems here so we can test them out and get on to ntl. Myabe get a nice shiney new modem out of them too...

Thats mad! I get the same scenario - sb4100, 10 Mb upgrade running about 4.4 MB in actuality, have noticed odd spurrious reboots, and having just followed the BBC weather link above out of devilment, that definately causes the modem to restart

I will note any other sites I get an issue with, thanks

Re: SB4100 Rebooting after firmware upgrade

I have exactly the same problem after the firmware upgrade, though I'm still on 3Mb

I'm in the Hemel/Watford area

Thanks for starting the thread Bambi - I was going to do it, then forgot...

Re: SB4100 Rebooting after firmware upgrade

I also have the same issue with a friends website.
But it only resets every so oftern, not like the bbc site, which is every time.

I cant post the url here, and I dont really want to give it to ntl to test.

Just spoke with TS and they tell me its a known problem, something to do with load balancing and it 'should' be taken care of in the next couple of days.
It only appears to be effecting people on 3Mb lines that have received a firmware update.

Not sure how much of that is true, but we shall wait and see.

Re: SB4100 Rebooting after firmware upgrade

Has anyone reported this to NTL? If you haven't, please do, NTL may not be aware there is a problem. If they are aware, they should fix it. If they are not aware, they won't.

Thinking about calling them again see if I get a different response

OK , phoned 'tech support' again.
This time I have a spyware virus. Please run a full system scan.

I try to tell him I run a full system scan daily, and have already run a spyware scan, also it is happening under XP, 2K and lunix. Now aparently a windows virus can also infect a linux box.... this is news to me...

I am now running said full system scan, cos he wouldnt help me any more until I did, as there are 'procedures to follow sir....' or might that be a script...

Updates soon...

Re: SB4100 Rebooting after firmware upgrade

On the phone to NTL as I type, been on hold, on and off for 30 mins now, they have watched the modem reboot via www.address and via IP address, via proxy and every other way.

Starting to feel sorry for the guy...

2nd line support here we come.

YAY someone who knows thier stuff

The HFC error is to do with the modem not being able to hold the 10Mb speeds with the last firmware upgrade

Back on hold 39 mins...

OK 64 mins later...
Its not NTLs network
Its not the modem
Its the ~@##kin router

Basicaly this:

HFC: T4 Timer Expired
Received Response to Broadcast Maintenance Request, but no Unicast Maint
Received Async Error Range Failed
HFC: Shutting Downstream Down

Means the modem cant cope with 10mb and is losing the signal.
Tried downgrading service to 3Mb same effect, no signal
Upgraded to 10Mb problem still there.
Tried modem direct to a single pc and it worked fine.

So mine, and 2nd line support's conclusion is that its my router as it cant cope with full duplex 10Mb thru its WAN port.
My router is an old Linksys BEFSR41 (v1 I think)
Time to get a new router.......

But this doesn't explain the same problem when on 3Mb, and how can the router cause the modem to reboot?

Re: SB4100 Rebooting after firmware upgrade

I aint going thru another hour of TS at 4.5p a min
Try without a router, directly connected to your pc, if it works then its probably your router.
You could have a 10Mb signal but with only a 3Mb config file in your modem.
Not sure about that as I'm not a cable guru

Re: SB4100 Rebooting after firmware upgrade

I used to have a BEFSR41 v2 but have moved on from that 5 year old design.

AFAIK the v1 and v2 only had a half duplex 10 Mbps WAN port.

I've seen reports that they can't handle 6Mbps but earlier versions of firmware such as V1.39 could.

see

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/rema...on+firmware+46

for example.

But doesn't explain why it should crash the cable modem unless the duplex mode is not been set correctly?

Re: SB4100 Rebooting after firmware upgrade

I have had my SB4100 conected directly to my XP box for over an hour, with no reboots and getting nice speeds too. (Full 10Mb)

Reconected it via my Linksys BEFSR41 v2 Router and got reboots within a couple of minutes.

Ordered a new router.
