Connecting laptop to cable modem instead of desktop

My desktop connects via cable modem to NTL, using the USB. I have a laptop which I use away from home, on dialup with another ISP.

Can I plug my laptop into the cable modem via USB, instead of the desktop when home, to download large files and would my dialup settings be altered?

I have tried the helpdesk, but they said the only gave advice on one standalone PC.

Any help/advice appreciated

Re: Connecting laptop to cable modem instead of desktop

You can certainly plug in the lappy, instead of, not as well as the desktop. The modem has to be powered down (switched off) and back on again, allowed to settle, before switching on the PC.

Conflict withthe dialup settings is a bit more complex. You may need to create a second profile, or disable the dial up.

Re: Connecting laptop to cable modem instead of desktop

you will need to install the drivers for the cable modem on the laptop.

Insert your ntl broadband installer, but don't run the software.

Then disconnect the modem from the pc and unplug the power for 30 seconds. When the power comes back on and sync and rdy go solid, plug into the laptop. Follow the driver installation wizard, and if necessary, point it to x:/drivers/ambit/ (where x is your cd drive) to find the driver files.

This will then setup for the broadband. To make sure you can still dial up, open internet explorer, and go to tools-> internet options-> connections-> and chose "dial whenever a network connection is not present". Select ok.

This should mean that now, when the cable modem is connected it will use it, but the rest of the time will prompt you to use the dial up connection.
