Wifi 6 Backward Compatible or not?

Is wifi6 Backward Compatible with older devices?
The reason i ask, a friend is thinking of getting a new router as his is no longer supported the manufacturer and hes chosen this....
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus-...nw-11r-as.html
The reason hes gone with wifi 6 is for future proofing.

If you scroll down the page you linked to the specification section there's a whole plethora of supported network standards to choose from.

Dont ya hate it when they do that???
Its like they are trying to force people to "new" everything.... (Nothing older will work)

 Pathetic......

It should be backwards compatible with (5GHz a/n/ac)
I don't think it is exactly compatible with (2.4GHz b/g/n) but usually the router lets you set up an old style network next to the modern one.

Wireless drops out occasionally, sorted with a quick reboot.
Only 2.4 GHz so possibly just can't handle everything currently thrown at it

 | OK that's strange. I'm not on wifi 6, but I have to keep a separate (2.4GHz b/g/n) radio for things as old as my ps3.

Wifi 6 is 802.11ax.

Most 802.11 routers should be backwards compatible but there are a few niggly issues. Some 2.4Ghz devices have problems connecting when you only have one wifi name for both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, so creating 2 wifi networks, one for each can help.

Also the mode a router runs can cause problems for specific devices but generally new routers are backwards compatible and revert down to the spec of whatever is connected to them. So Wifi 6 devices will benefit from the way it handles many wifi connections while the older devices wont directly, but could indirectly if the wifi 6 device is using a different band.

I paid £65 for a global version of Xiaomi Mi AIoT AX3600 wifi 6 router which should be turning up any day. Looking forward to testing that out and more progress on the WRT front.

If you want a cheap and cheerful WiFi 6 router then the Honor 3 might be one to consider - a friend has one and loves it. Just noticed it's on offer at £29.99 but unsurprisingly out of stock!

Also worth remembering there's only a limited amount of devices that support connecting at WiFi 6 at the moment

A wifi 5 standard router should suffice most individuals, unless you're looking to future proof
