I don't understand this

I pay for 100Mbps. But I am currently receiving speeds of around 50Mbps.

So I ring Virgin, and the chap was very helpful, but ultimately said that it is not slow enough, for enough of the day for me to raise an issue.

How is that fair?

I'm at work all day and it's been 50Mbps since I came home!

By these figures it should be half price.

Or am I being unreasonable?

If you get that over wired Ethernet, ask them to run tests and if they cannot fix it, an engineer should come and sort it out.

They ran all the tests. It is wired. There were no cabinet issues.

It was in the "90%" zone whatever that means. He said there was congestion. But the congestion was only for 5% of the day, and they need 10% of the day to launch an investigation.

So I guess I'm stuck with receiving half of what I pay for.

Re: I don't understand this

No guarantee of getting 100% performance all the time sadly.

Is it being 50Mb causing you major problems? Are you downloading constantly throughout the evening hence it's notably degrading your service?

Nah I wouldn't say that.

What I would say though, that is everytime I notice I have about a 50% reduction in internet speed, I have awful problems streaming content from my NAS drive over my network. (via homeplugs.......and yes I know, I'd rather ethernet too)

Which is a big problem for me.

Then it's your Homeplugs, not Virgin, that are at least some of the issue.

The homeplugs aren't connected to my PC though. nIt's straight to router in modem mode. And it's getting half the speed it should.

Re: I don't understand this

That points to the main issue being the network card on your PC or your router in that case, given it affects streaming locally as well as Internet access.

Re: I don't understand this

yup, if you want to look at it from a different point of view ask yourself this: how or why is your internet connection affecting the communication between two devices on your lan? The answer is it can't which means something else is causing it and as Igni pointed out, the common denominator is your pc.

Apart from being an issue with your nic, you might want to investigate other issues such as if there are any services in the background which might be affecting performance. If all else fails restart your pc in safe mode and run a speedtest and see if you notice any difference.

A little story for you: I bought a new pc last June which has got an MSI motherboard. There is an app for the network card which comes bundled with the driver which allows you to change various settings including setting maximum bandwidth usage. This feature was already enabled and is set 100mbits default. It took me two days to work out (not continuously) to work out why I couldn't get more than 100mbits on my 152mbit connection no matter what I downloaded or where from.

Yeah if streaming locally is broken, that's not a virgin fault.

Re: I don't understand this

I'm getting awesome levels of wifi and wired speeds this morning. My wifi is actually higher than I've ever seen it.

Puzzled.

Re: I don't understand this

What - your NAS to PC speeds are excellent?

If you have Powerline 200s, you won't get much more than 50 meg through them.

And now it's been 20Mbps all evening.

Am I to just accept that this is the service I get?

Do you have other devices connected that could be using bandwidth? If not, do you have any other devices, be it smartphones or new(ish) laptops that you could connect to try a speed test? Limiting yourself to one device to run a speed test isn't going to give you reliable results. If you don't have another device, see if someone you know would mind coming around to connect to your network.
