PoundWorld ordered to pay £38,000 for remote controls that don't work.

Grimsby Crown Court has ordered PoundWorld to pay £38,000, after it sold remote controls that were completely useless in the UK - and only worked in South East Asia. The chain, which has 200 stores, was selling the £1 remotes between September 2010 and June 2012, leaving buyers confounded.

When I see people shopping in these Pound shops I shake my head, there's better deals in the local supermarkets.

Re: PoundWorld ordered to pay £38,000 for remote controls that don't work.

I think the only things I buy in them are branded goods, which are a lot cheapoer than the supermarket etc, for example, my local 99p store and pound land sometimes have King of Shaves, Gillette, and Bulldog shaving stuff, which is a good saving over other shops (and yes it is proper stuff, not with v similar name/packaging )

I was buying batteries but found they don't work for very long in some items, or even at al, and have had a couple leak (I think there's another thread here about that or maybe on hukd)

brand name food there can be hit or miss, some of the energy drinks are 3 or 4 for a quid, which is good, but often when they have proper coke 4 cans for £1 it's v near its sell/use by date which makes you wonder how long ago it's been sitting in a warehouse before it was discovered!

also soem of the deals look better than they are, chewing gum multipacks, you get less packs, so it's no cheaper than supermarkets.

I bought one of them I lost the remote to a 5 year old LCD TV I have in the spare room. Wasted so much time punching in the code for my TV without any success.

I'm sure I bought a 6 pack of Cheesy Wotsits that day too so it wasn't a total loss

There was a programme on the TV a few months ago about Poundland and their trading practices. Sometimes it was cheaper to shop in the local supermarket.

Re: PoundWorld ordered to pay £38,000 for remote controls that don't work.

If ever I buy anything from those stores I do so expecting the worst and thus far haven't had any really nasty surprises. It doesn't take the brain of a genius to work out which of the products they sell are likely to be nasty and which are not. A couple of years ago I bought a stainless steel mini-multi tool with LED light from our 99p shop. It's brilliant, still going strong and I wish I'd bought a few more tbh. Likewise a rubber headed mallet which I used to very good effect when relaying some crazy paving and rebuilding our garden steps a couple of years ago. Still going strong and excellent value for money.

I do like their little precision screwdrivers, for £1 I can lose a few and go back the next week and buy another set.

i buy CD cases in the 99p shop that can hold 50 cds for 99p.

I saw the same ones online somewhere a few weeks ago asking £3.99 + delivery.

Re: PoundWorld ordered to pay £38,000 for remote controls that don't work.

I've bought a load of HDMI cables from Poundland and never had an issue with them.

Usually only by brand foods and snacks from them. Either for work/lunch or cinema visits.

Would never by a remote from them though.

A good discount store is B & M but alas we don't have one of those in deepest Devon.
