Parents arrested then freed after girl dies
I must say I find this story a bit odd but I can't think of anything more upsetting than losing a child and then being almost immediately arrested on suspicion of murder.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-17636620
I'd really like to know what the circumstances were that made the parents suspects and required them to be arrested and detained in custody so soon after the death of their child.

I was actually going to start a thread on this subject and how irresponsible i felt that sky had been in reporting it .Yesterday they had big yellow "breaking news" banners all over their page telling the world that a couple had been arrested on suspicion of murder ,getting into the story a bit they went on to say that the child had died after having some sort of fit or seizure and the parents where doing CPR when the ambulance arrived ,they are now saying that the arrest happened because of a report from "experienced medical professionals" .To be put through that must be the worst thing ,but to have it splashed all over the news that you are suspected of your child's murder is terrible and i think some serious questions need to be asked about the reporting of this and the actions of the police and medical personnel
here's sky's link http://news.sky.com/home/uk-news/article/16204193

It happens a fair bit, more than you'd like to think
Surprised the media made such a big thing of it before all the facts were out and also shows once again the policy of arresting everyone, rather than having people 'help with enquiries' isn't the best.

Re: Parents arrested then freed after girl dies
shows most not all Derek dont understand " Arrest to allow the prompt and effective investigation of the offence " shouldnt mean arrest every one. The parents are unlikely to flee most likely would have been quite ( happy may not be the right ord here ) willing to stay in the area or would be willing to attend an interview if needed i realy dont see any one could justify arresting them.

Re: Parents arrested then freed after girl dies
I'm glad it's not only me who finds this whole thing disturbing. I'd still like to think the police had a sound reason to suspect something but unless they make their reasons public I think many people will judge their actions as harsh in the extreme, especially at such a tragic moment in this couple's lives.
As for the reporting, I have long thought something needs to be done about the 24hour rolling news media's, in particular, habit of latching onto scant detail and extrapolating it out of all proportion based on little more than hearsay and speculation. Perhaps if they had to spend an equal amount of airtime acknowledging their errors, they'd think a bit more carefully about how quickly they break news, how reliable their sources are and how much sensationalist speculation they engage in.
I recall in the immediate aftermath of 7/7 and the de Menezes shooting, reporters pestering the police on the scene for information. Obviously at that early stage it was clear than any information they had would be sketchy and quite possibly confused or inaccurate. Rather than acknowledging that fact and making allowances for it, the inaccuracies in what was said at the time by some of the spokesmen were later used against them in a trial by media campaign to try and show how inept or even deliberately misleading they'd been.
Anyway, as it stands, I feel extremely sorry for the parents of this little girl and think they have been appallingly treated. I hope very much they find the strength to deal with what's happened to them from somewhere.

Re: Parents arrested then freed after girl dies
The telegraph ran a report yesterday saying they think that the girl died from carbon monoxide, from the BBQ that they had used earlier in the day, and had left outside the tent - and that the parents were arrested on advice from a medical person (or words to that effect) - I'll see if I can find a link.
here we go : http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukne...-old-girl.html

Cheers for that MLM.
Well I'm surprised they're taking this matter as well as they are apparently but all credit to them for so doing.
Yes I'd read this bit before elsewhere:

Hampshire Constabulary defended making the initial arrests, saying they were “necessary as a result of a report from experienced medical professionals.”

and would still like to know exactly what that comment was and why it required immediate arrests to be made in such awful circumstances. There's also the bit about 'screaming' being heard but then that would equally easily apply to some sort of attack as a mother finding her daughter in such a state.
Still confused.

I think it's down what Derek said earlier .The default action of the police seems of late to arrest first and ask questions and colate facts second ,with no thought of how that arrest will affact the lives of innocent parties .As you say the parents have taken it well considering (or appear to have) but i still feel that they should not have been put through that without further investigation

My initial thought was she'd consumed drugs of some sort.. "seizures/fitting" when Id seen them arrested. Turns out they get released. Shocking treatment of parents who'd just lost their lil girl..

Re: Parents arrested then freed after girl dies
Well when the facts are known, the police's actions and rationale will no doubt come under close scrutiny. I dare say there'll be legal eagles and others (some with an anti-police agenda) offering their services to the parents right now. I really do think something has gone terribly wrong here and see a potential storm brewing.

Re: Parents arrested then freed after girl dies
It should not of been made big news like that as its not fair on the parents. If is procedure where an infant has been involved that the police get involved.
