London 2012 - Overhyped?

Apparently there are 200 days to go untill London 2012. That warrant's yet another media event, this time a junket for the Cabinet to visit the Olympic Park.

Is there anyone else already so bored with the incessant hype behind this event that they'll be glad when it's all over?

Re: London 2012 - Overhyped?

Nope. I am very excited. I have two tickets thus far, one of them obtained via the resale on Friday (before they took it down again). The second of these tickets is for the final canoeing session in Lee Valley Park which is a 10 minute walk from my front door. I used to ride my bike around there as a teenager and in a few months I will be there watching a Gold Medal ceremony for the Olympics.

More Importantly London is hosting a massive party for a few weeks and we get to advertise ourselves to the world. The opening ceremony in China was watched by 2 billion people, imagine a similar number watching our opening ceremony in London. When do we ever get opportunity like that? Will we ever have another one in our lifetimes? It will be a day to feel proud, to celebrate and show a huge amount of the world's population what we can do.

Re: London 2012 - Overhyped?

Nope. The Olympic Games coming to your home country is pretty much a once-in-a-lifetime event and when everything else in the news is so utterly gloomy we are blessed as a nation to have such an important global event coming to us now of all times.

If we could just drop our national propensity to moan about evrything for a few months, we might actually enjoy both the attention and the massive influx of foreign tourist cash the event will bring.

... and as far as I'm concerned, anything that gets Cabinet meetings out of the Westminster bubble is a good thing. Plus, a ride across town is hardly a 'junket' ...

Re: London 2012 - Overhyped?

Yes true there is a lot of hype Rob but remember this is a once in a lifetime event that most of us will never have in our lifetime again so l think we should just accept that there will be these media events leading up to it and basically my advice is to just ignore these media events and just savour the event when it comes around.

Re: London 2012 - Overhyped?

Not here. I want the games to be a massive success and believe that the prophets of doom who predicted a shambles in building the various venues etc. have already been proved wrong. Given that we are where we are, we should be proud of what's been achieved and all be hoping that the event will prove a massive success with a significant boost to the UK 's profile and economy. If anything more media attention is what's required. Portions of our media in particular are excellent at running ourselves down and making their predictions of failure almost a self fulfilling prophecy. We need to break that habit and shout about the success story which, so far, is London 2012.

Whilst it may bring pleasure to some to see the Olympics turn into another Millennium Dome project they can whine about, they should reflect on how successful that's become, albeit in foreign ownership which is regretful. I'm confident the Olympic games will be looked back upon as a massive success and I'm hoping that its legacy will be of lasting benefit to the UK in one way or another.

Another vote for the games It's great to have seen the progression in preparations from being awarded the games through the present day and hopefully to a successful conclusion and legacy. The more publicity the better

Re: London 2012 - Overhyped?

Can't wait for the Olympics myself.

2012 will be a difficult year in many ways, not least economically. To have the opportunity to host such a Mega-Event bringing in loads of cash, people and advertising around the world is just very fortunate for us.

Bring on LONDON 2012

What Will said, and I don't live in London - I think this will be a great boost to the UK's image, and bring more tourists in.

Re: London 2012 - Overhyped?

It's a great opportunity for UK PLC to promote itself to the rest of the world and I hope the media don't embark upon a campaign of talking it down. The fact is the moeny's been spent now and we all have a vested intrerest in making sure it's a huge success. The inquest should happen when it's all over not before it's started.

Re: London 2012 - Overhyped?

I'm the opposite, I never watch or care for sport, so can't say I care one way or the other, hehe.

I'm sure it'll be a great spectacle though and lots will be entertained by it, so no doubt it's a good thing.

Re: London 2012 - Overhyped?

<--- States my view, with the Olympic Logo, (which in my option still looks like Lisa Simpson doing something dodgy, well on a family forum thats as far as I dare go)

Wherever I am on the 27th July, home or holiday I will watch the opening/closing ceromony.

Re: London 2012 - Overhyped?

It took me ages to read the '2012' logo as 2012 - I don't know if that says more about the logo or me. My involvement will be limited to my dad recording for me the only event I'm interested in, viz. the archery...if they even show it, that is.

It is overhyped, and the only part of Britain that'll benefit - if indeed it does - will be London...as usual. Ye gods, you'd think the UK was nothing but London with the rest just tacked-on, wouldn't you?

Where else would Britain host the Olympics? London had the hotels, the airports, the trains and so on already there. All that was needed was the Olympic park itself and Stratford International (the latter not really needed either). We were up against New York and Paris, London was our best chance at competing with them.
