Asus Rampage III Extreme Warning

Quick warning for anyone considering this board DO NOT BUY IT!!!

I have had 3 over the space of 8 days and all of them have, had the same error pop up of IOH over temperature and it is caused by running your ram at it's rated speed, because Asus have used cheap thermal paste and also not enough of it.

To fix the problem you have to remove the heatsink's, and replace the thermal paste but indoing so you void the warranty.

Did you realise the Intel CPU specifications for the i7 920 is a max of 1066

so even if a board says it will run 1600+ with a cpu there is never a guarantee the cpu will like it

Did you know that using artic silver on the CPU in theory voids the warranty on the CPU also

So which paste should you use then that does not void the warranty

I agree with Damien, Why should you have to fix a board that is only a few days old. Asus have gone down a step or 2 in my eyes over the last year

In theory the manufacturers specified heatsink, fan and attached thermal compound is the ONLY thing that will not void the warranty on the cpu

It does though depend on wether it's an OEM cpu or official supplied upgrade CPU or even if it's a CPU supplied to the systems manufacturer

I didn't mention the cpu zing, as I know that they "officially" only support 1066mhz ram.

The problem is with the heatsink's on the board not cooling the IOH chip.

You mention that Artic silver 5 void's the warranty but why are they allowed to make and, sell the stuff knowing that if you use it they know it's going to void the warranty or do they replace the cpu if it is faulty after you have used there thermal paste.

This thread was only started to warn people of the issue's with this particular motherboard, and that if they got one how to fix the issue at there own risk as it is classed as a modification to the board therefore you void the warranty in doing so.

but you mentioned this. Which seeing as you do not run 1066 ram means you are running the system beyond spec

Ive read similar issues with that board even when watercooling the chipset

You over clock which voids all warranty anyway if they want to push it

stock paste on a stock cooler if you buy a retail boxed cpu with 3 years warranty. If however you buy OEM then you get a year with whatever paste. Obviously as long as you clean the paste off the cpu and cooler they aint gonna know. Just keep the cloth away from the pins lol lol

lol yeah i clean it off whilst it is still in the board then clean the rest off with a earbud.

Got a desktop fan pointing in the case to help cool the graphics card and nb and sb but it still didn't help cool it

Damien no offence but you are proof personified as to why people should not spend thousands on trying to run a massively overclocked juiced up machine

Ive got a nice overclock on my machine a fast graphics card fast memory and it just works my last machine although a generation behind just works. You however have nothing but bother with all your systems you spend spend spend never happy ,you tweak a machine within an inch of its life and all you get in return are a few extra frames per second and so much stress its unbelievable and a machine that almost spends as much time on the bench as it does in use

Close-up of the underside of the X58 heatsink on the heatsink/heatpipe assembly Only a 3rd of the die on the X58 chip had any thermal compound on that was actually making any contact with the heatsink which is why it would have been overheating so quickly and why putting pressure on the heatsink caused the temperature to return to normal as it then made proper contact with the top of the die. So this is a factory assembly QA issue.

My next step will be to clean off whatever that yellow thermal compound gunk is that's already on there and apply some Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic CÃ©ramique instead (whichever I find works best). I'm 99% sure that doing so will then solve the X58 chip overheating problem on my board. Hopefully this will save me from having to RMA the board. I'll report back again with the results once I've done this.
