Re: Connection issues..

From my analysis of the modem stats you kindly provided, the downstream power's a touch on the high side, and the upstream power's a touch low. Downstream ideally should be around 0 dBmV. Upstream should ideally be anywhere between 40 and 50 dBmV, but can be as low as mid-30s. Somebody more qualified than me can either throw out what I said or back it up with a solution.

Upstream congestion. Reboot cable modem until you're no longer on the upstream at 41MHz.

Re: Connection issues..

I've got an atenatour on the modem and the stb, from my engineers visit. I've rebooted 6 / 7 times.

Re: Connection issues..

Then you're probably hosed. It's congestion though, no doubt. You appear to be in an area that's having every ounce of bandwidth wrung out of it.

You're on a shoehorned in 27Mbit downstream and a shoehorned in 4.5Mbit upstream.

Switch the modem off for a little while instead of just rebooting it, and if it has a factory reset option use it, might be able to stop it seeking the 331MHz downstream and then if you're lucky you'll get the 402.75MHz one and a different upstream.

Is it possible to ask through the appropriate newsgroup to have your upstream changed to a less congested one? .....or does it not work like that?

The system is self-balancing. Even if there is a better one available there's no guarantee of staying on it.

The point of the resetting and stuff is to see if there are any more available, there might not be.

Re: Connection issues..

Thanks for this. Ive been powering down the modem and leaving it as you suggested, still the same. "None peak" getting around 16MB - "peak" getting around 9.6MB. I've took off the atenautor and the upstream power level just shoots up and the conneciton drops right down to about 2MB, again, tried direct etc etc. Makes difference.

Re: Connection issues..

All sorted now. Engineer just been, he was good. He got authorisation and gave me a 50MB modem, he explained it was the frequencies and now, I am just short of 20MB. Well done to Virgin and the very very very helpfull tech. He also extended my wire whilst he was here, so i'm very happy.

Broadbandings, thank you.

Re: Connection issues..

That was good of him and guaranteed you're on the new network now.

Plus if you ever want to move to 50Mbit no need for an engineer visit, which is nice.

Great engineer he went way beyond the call.

It was very nice indeed. Great guy, it was the same tech. He checked with networks before arriving and confirmed no congestion. Nice looking modem, I will move to 50MB eventually, just a slow process.

Re: Connection issues..

Hey
Let me get this right; you're on a 20Mb service with the "new" 50Mb modem?
Never knew that Vm did this! I got an engineer coming out to sort out a slow internet connection (paying for 20mb and only getting between 5-12Mb)... I wonder if I can ge the shiny new modem

Re: Connection issues..

Yup. He said it was a frequencies issue and I needed to be on a different frequency.

He had to get authorisation and ring to activate the modem.

Although, just had a wierd moment, with the modem.
