Help tp-link wr641g
Hi i'm having problems connecting to virgin media using wr641g tp-link router, it is connected through motorola sb4200 modem. I have put tp-link wireless card in my desktop and have exellent connection between p.c. and router, also internet works fine when direct from modem. Have tried quick set up on tp-link set up page but still no joy, although not sure on some of settings required i.e. ppoe or dynamic ip. help please.

Re: Help tp-link wr641g
If you switch off the computer then modem and router at the socket, then start in the following order:
1) switch the modem on and wait for the lights to go steady i.e ready light stops flashing.
2) then switch on your router
3) then switch on your computer
if you do things in this order it should pick up the basic settings then you just need to go into the router settings and setup your wifi security settings.

Re: Help tp-link wr641g
Thanks for advice, i tried this earlier after reading similar threads regarding same problem but with different equipment, still no joy, still unsure if virgin media connection is ppoe, static ip, or dynamic ip and if i need to manually change any settings in tp-link setup. Also the modem i have (motorola sb4200) is about six years old, is it possible it may not be compatible with router? Any help or advice is really appreciated and hopefully the problem is something simple that i am overlooking. P.s. since last post i have also connected router to p.c. with network cable and not relied on wireless connection, but still no luck.

Re: Help tp-link wr641g
Anyway Welcome to the Cable Forum.
i'm not as up on the settings as some on here.
but i'm pretty sure you just need a dynamic ip but as i said before you should just be able to switch everything off and switch back on in the order above and it should pick it up.
The modem should be ok it is a little old but otherwise should be no problem, also you should not need to manually set anything up to pick up the basic settings, only when you have got connected then you go into the router settings and set up the security on it.
i have heard on some routers that you need to connect via a cable to the back of the router first to set it up, then you can connect via wireless, might be worth a try i know you have said you have tried it wired but did you follow the instructions above when you did it.
hth but i'm sure someone with more knowledge will be around soon.
Come on guy's help this poor chap out i'm nearly at the end of my knowledge for wireless.
where's that zingle chap when you need him.

Re: Help tp-link wr641g
Hey Presto it works,
At last it is working, i carried out all the restart, but this time using a cable connection between modem and p.c. and not relying on wireless connection.
Once connected i then found that router set up page http:// 192.168.1.1, had now got settings in the WAN, previously these were all at zero.
I was going to run 2 laptops and desktop wireless, but will now probably keep desktop wired and will shortly attempt connection of laptops to router via wireless ( fingers crossed ).
Saabmania, thanks for the advice, wish i had used this site earlier instead of going round in circles for days on end, plug and play my a**e.
