XP keeping changed drive letter - help
For reasons to boring to really go into.
I needed to rename a USB port using a memory stick " A" . instead of the 3.5" drive
So far so good managed to do that.
My little problem is this. As the memory sticks ( yes I mean sticks) are moved between two sites. When changed over they go back to being "F" drive. Is there any way that I can get them to be remembered as "A" .
Ok its not a big deal but I have enough to do with out being asked to change it 3 times day. The user for reasons of " don`t let them mess" management cant do this. Guys its a long walk to that PC !!!!

Re: XP keeping changed drive letter - help
did you change the letter using disk management? - if you did then it should keep the letter, unless the machines have floppy drives using A:
If they have an A: drive already then the USB will take the next available drive letter...

SUBST "f:\" A:
Run that in a batch file. (Ok, F: will be there, but A: will also be there

Re: XP keeping changed drive letter - help
I thought historically that A: & B: were reserved for floppy drives 5-1/4" (If you can remember that far back), 3.1/2" and C: & D: were for HDD.

You got it. We have "removed " the 3.5" floppy via the Bios freeing it up.
So I can rename to "a" As I said this I have worked around & I can name The USB "a" I need to make it stick on the change of sticks .
Will try the other suggestion when back in work

Yes & no Had to go into bios to free "a" then used disk management to change it but it only holds for a single stick next time a stick goes in it "find E ,f ,g what ever & I do it over again

Re: XP keeping changed drive letter - help
Random Hom3r to the rescue.
I have several External usb drives, I tried the attached link (as well as key info incase link goes bad) it worked.
Note that you will get warning messages

Open an explorer window, and right-click "My Computer", then select "Manage"
On the left-hand side, you'll find "Storage" and under that will be, among other things, "Disk Management" ... select that.
This will show your drives and partitions. This looked very familiar to me, but I can't remember the reason I had to be out there before, maybe next time I'll remember how to get there quicker!
In the upper part of the right-hand display, right-click the USB drive you have installed, then select "Change Drive Letter and Paths..."
On the dialog that comes up, select "Change..." then select your drive letter of choice from the combo box and press OK.
You'll get a warning message, but that's just in case you are changing the drive letter of a disk that you have software installed to, so press "Yes" on that dialog. You are back to the Disk Management dialog now, and your newly selected drive letter is showing for your USB drive. Close this dialog, and you're done.

It does work I've assigned drives to the following, using some logic, these will only work on the PC used to assign the letter (I will double check later by plugging in another PC)
L: 40GB HDD
M: Multi-media drive for Xbos360
P: PSP
S: Moblie Phone
T: Moblie Phone 4GB card
W: Work
