V+ to be installed tomorrow

Hi all,

Just thought I'd say, I have now (at last) opted for the VIP pack so am getting a shiny new V+ box and the old box moved upstairs.

I've bought a component cable in preperation for the install, as my TV doesn' tahve HDMI :-( so now looking forward to getting a decent picture upstairs, and to be able to record Eastenders so that the missus can watch that during the day and I don't have to put up with watching it....

You should consider getting an hd tv asap. having the box connected with the hdmi cable makes a significant difference to ALL channels.

Re: V+ to be installed tomorrow

I maybe wrong but as I understand it, a 1080i compatible TV will receive the 1080i signal but will display as 480p. You will get a better picture but it wont be HD. Again, I may be wrong but that is how I understand it. A 720p HDMI connection gives me the best results for my TV though, Planet Earth in HD looks amazing.

Re: V+ to be installed tomorrow

Also you will find some programmes may not work over component, especially in the future. This is because of copy protection known as HDCP.
HDCP only works over HDMI.

At the moment this may only effect PPV content..you will have to investigate.

Think about what you just wrote there. Do you realise how ludicrous that suggestion is.

Getting a V+ box requires a tv upgrade to get a decent picture?

Dear oh dear, glad I stuck to 6/7 year old Tivo unit that can store 990 hours of programs, d/l to my pc, access over the internet and oh yes, KEEP MY ORIGINAL TELLY.

unless the V+ can only output hd using hdmi, your wrong

a 1080i compat tv, "should" output a 1080i, and 720p

1080p can also be achieved over component, only thing that cant be transmitted over component are upscale (because this is only supported using a digital connection as governed by the dvd consortium)

the only reason people belive that component cant do hd signals is down to sony-bs,

whilst a hdmi cable would be better based on experience of component looking washed out compaired to hdmi, but thats the only reason i say that

Think you might have got me wrong there. Component does output HD resolutions, which is how my 360 manages 720p. I never suggested it didn't. The point I was making is generally TV's without HDMI can accept HD resolutions but downscales them to fit either an SD screen or a 720p screen depending on the TV.

The term '1080i Compatible' is massively misleading in my opinion, I had an RP TV that was supposed to be 1080i compatible but could never display a full 1080i image.

Perhaps you can explain what you mean. The OP is getting the vip package which includes the V+ box and when i changed to this package it did improve the quality on other channels as well as give hd of course on hd content etc.
Thats why i suggested investing in an hd tv would be a good idea.

So where is the problem?
Ive done it so why cant he if he chooses to?

Re: V+ to be installed tomorrow

I don't think the missus would allow me to get another TV when we bought this plasma HD compatible TV about a year and a half ago it cost nearly £2K .... Very depressing that it doesn't have HDMI but for now I will have to live with component....
