Re: Problems browsing (Cambridge Area)

Same problem, CB4 area.

It seems like their DNS servers (at least, and probably lots of other things) are broken - try the same lookup 10-20 times in a row and sometimes you get the IP back (www.ntlworld.com for example). You'll find that you can ping anything you can actually get a lookup for just fine, no packet loss.

I'm going to phone them now.

Re: Problems browsing (Cambridge Area)

I've been having this problem on/off for the last few weeks... the weekend before last was terrible (sites not appearing, loading slowly, continually having to refresh to get success.. etc) then early last week it suddenly got better before degrading again over the week. Weekend just gone, the internet has been *unusable* it's been so slow. If we had a BT line, I'd have gone onto dialup for a reprieve - it's THAT bad. Loading www.virginmedia.com can take up to 2-3 minutes to load in full, and even then it may/may not have broken images.

Yet strangely I can get into an online game (city of heroes) just fine.... and downloading something from rapidshare, whilst it takes a while to actually 'connect' to the file (up to a couple of mins).. the download comes through at the full speed??

Birmingham B15 here. Confused and fed up!

Re: Problems browsing (Cambridge Area)

They told me my cablemodem is fine, which I already knew.

Then they told me there are no outages affecting my area, which is wrong. I explained that I'm a network engineer and surprisingly the person I was speaking to turned out to be a geek of some kind. He gave me a couple of alternate DNS servers to try, but I get refused by them - probably the old Blueyonder IPs...... Worrying that it's still broken, usually overnight problems that don't exist magically fix themselves at 9am. As for timings it was still fine as of 2:30am last night.

Sky is looking tempting, cheaper TV service too. Might be worth anyone else in Cambridge & surrounding areas giving them a call - I think they only bother to investigate things when a number of people have complained.

There you go - they've decided to admit this one.

Re: Problems browsing (Cambridge Area)

There was a lightening strike somewhere in the CB2 area and I believe it knocked the grid out yesterday evening. Power down the modem and any attached hardware like hub's and wireless routers. Restart the modem and than the attached hardware. Leave it for 2 - 4 minutes (sync / rdy) lights permanently on.
