Problems with Linksys WRT54GC router/ VM Modem

Hi,

I have VM BB Xl now for about 3 weeks and it has been fine. However, I was trying to open some ports in the routers admin lasts night when suddenly the router became unresponsive.

I therefore had to reset the router and now I can't get it to recognise an internet connection through it.

When I plug the modem staright into my laptop I can get an internet connection fine but when I run the Router setup it detects the router fine but it can't detect an internet connection?

This is extremely annoying as it has been working fine up until now.

In the router's setup it asks which internet connection type you have (pppoe, ppp, dhcp) I pretty sure it is dhcp for cable but I have tried all of the types and none of them work. Also I tried to release and renew the ipaddress and it keeps coming back with an error that it can't find server?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I spent 2 hours last night trying to work out what the problem is (resetting modem,pc and router) to no avail and i'm sure its something pretty simple.

You dont need to clone your mac address, the fact that it worked before you started fiddling with it should tell you that.

Can you reverse the changes you made to get it going and then make the changes again? If you cant do that id suggest doing a factory reset and start from there. At least you will know your back to the point before you made any changes.

Yes your right it need to be a DHCP connection type.

Hi, we are having a similar problem too. The router (Linksys WRT54GC v.2) worked fine with our previous Internet provider, but we can't make it work with our new cable connection. After a day of changing settings and resetting both the router and the modem we have finally managed to make one laptop with Win 7 on it to access the Internet through the wireless network. However, two other computers (Win XP and Vista) don't gain access to the web, while connect to the wireless network and successfully ping the "lucky" laptop.

Having read multiple threads on the web about problems with this particular device, we are thinking of replacing it with a better router.

I have finally solved my problem, and this could possibly help you. I am not an expert in Internet routing, and sertain things can be irrelevant, so just writing down the sequence of actions step-by step:

1. Unplug the LAN cables which connect the router with modem and computer.

2. Reset the router by holding the reset button for a while (the user's manual recommends 8 seconds, and the button is located under the small stand panel).

3. Turn off the router.

4. Connect your computer to the modem directly and try to get connected to the web. Reset the modem if there is no conection. I have the impression that my modem is set up to work with only one device at a time, and needs resetting if I connect different machines.

5. Follow the router wizard (can be downloaded from Cisco website) to set up the wireless network.

6. If, after the wizard is finished, you can not connect to the web, reset your modem again, as the router has got a different MAC address with the computer. (I have tried address cloning on this step, but only modem reset helped in my case).

Hope this helps, and sorry if it is annoyingly trivial.
