New Router

My router is bust, and need a new one asap - any recomendations? WiFi I can take or leave, until N is ratified I cant see the point in it. So all it really needs it a port to take the eithernet cable from the cable modem, and preferably a switch for my internal network.

P.s. This was correctly identified by tech support! The chaps at India spotted this one for me (after making small chit chat asking if my life was good?!!!). So quite happy... shame you are going to have to pay for it soon though.

Linksys is Cisco done cheap. Only my opinion, but I would avoid. (I love my Belkin..)

That linksys is my current router - so may avoid it again! (it has started acting up, losing the admin password, random resets and dropping packets). Might take a peak at what belkin has to offer.

I would avoid new wrt54g and gs like the plague, also the V4 befsr41. The new versions are cutdown cheapo versions of the old reliable ones.

The WRT54GL (L for linux) is the only linksys I'd go for at the moment, fully compatible with lots of 3rd party firmware etc.

Yeh spent the day working out that the WRT54GL is the best one to go for in terms of being able to get DD-wrt or openwrt on it.

i have had 2 linksys router's die on me in the past. This was overheating due to paper being strewn all over the routers or one client decided to 'tuck it under the sofa' not the manufacturers.

dlink are good by the way, i use the dl-624 and have been for 2 years! - installed the latest draft n netgear routers in a few places (for some reason that is what mother superior orders...) but no problems here

Linksys and a few other groups were bought out by Cisco to hit the "home market" as there 800 series routers were still far to expensive for the normal consumer, they are NOT cisco quality. I have been using linksys routers due to availability the last couple of months and yes the features are great but not the reliability. If you are going wireless or wired then i would go for Netgear. yes i have come accross problems but not like i have with the others. Wireless or wired netgear all the way. Dont get me wrong if i could afford Cisco kit i would use cisco kit and anyone that is CCNA or above would appreciate it but not all of us have money to burn! I have a Netgear switch and router they are the best i have had.
