I think we have some footage of Deep Purple on the "Old Grey Whistle Test"?

I loved the intro music.

Re: The Old Grey Whistle Test

I must have watched a different show... all I remember (i was a young kid at the time) was a boring sounding bloke, a dismal studio, and lots of bands with bearded musicians. A sort of Open University for musos.

However, maybe it was supposed to appeal to viewer older than me.

well I did leave out Kevin Ayers, Roy Harper & Robert Wyatt - I'm not sure where John Otway & 'wild' Willy Barrett fit in, though

or Val Doonican

Re: The Old Grey Whistle Test

I seem to have this recollection of a large fluffy rabbit strapped to a BBCTV camera coasting along behind Bob Harris as he was introducing the next set. The Bonzo Dog DooDa Band who were playing on that show might have had something to do with it.

'I got home late, very late, what'll tell my wife? "darling - I've been beaten up, again?" - a punk stopped me on the street, he said "have you got a light, mac", I said "no - but I've got a dark brown overcoat"

- they were mad

Re: The Old Grey Whistle Test

I remember seeing a Band called `Lonestar` and the album was called `Firing or shooting on all six` or something like that.

Also remember seeing Thin Lizzy live on there one night. Excellent.
I recall watching Top of The Pops in the seventies and getting REALLY ****ed off because the Bands playing were obviously miming.
Also had my first listen to Tom Petty on that show as well.

Re: The Old Grey Whistle Test

AIR there were a couple of presenters before Whispering Bob; the first, I think, was Richard Williams. I remember on one occasion he was interviewing Captain Beefheart, a slightly (to say the least) eccentric musician, and it was quite obvious Richard simply couldn't understand the responses to his questions (the Captain could be a little - er - lateral minded...). So, after every reply, he had to change the subject rather than admit he didn't have the least idea what had just been said to him...

the DVD sleeve-notes credit Mike Appleton with being the 'founding producer' & states the 'key' (whatever that means??) presenters as Richard Williams, Bob Harris, Anne Nightingale, Mark Ellen, David Hepworth & Andy Kershaw.

Who?

The only person I recognise is Val Doonican.

Incidentally, Val is now an artist and not a bad one at that... http://www.valdoonican.co.uk/painting.htm

And no, I'm not a Val Doonifan or whatever his admirers call themselves. I just checked Google to see if the cardiganed crooner was still alive!
