Moving out of a cabled area - contract problems

Just wondering if anyone else has suffered from the same problem ...

Back in November I signed up to a 12 month contract with NTL to provide 750MB broadband for £25 a month, plus free line rental for 12 months. At the time of signing up I knew I would be moving house within the year, and asked the representative how that would affect my contract. "No problems" he said, "we'll either transfer the service to your new house or if we can't provide the same service, we'll cancel the contract".

Now I'm moving, and it turns out the new area doesn't have cable. However they are trying to make me take their Freedom product, which is basically ADSL I believe. The problem is, to do this I have to 1) Pay BT to install a phone line (currently around the £70 mark I think as its a brand new house), and 2) Pay BT £10.50 a month line rental on top of my £25 broadband fee.

Therefore as I would be paying £35.50 a month for line rental and broadband, not £25, I decided to cancel. They are saying though that by doing this I breach the terms of my contract and will have to pay out the remaining period. All that despite the (unfortunately only verbal) assurances that if I move I'd either be given the same service, or have my contract nulled.

Anyone have any similar experiences?

Re: Moving out of a cabled area - contract problems

i am having a very similar problem (but with telewest). i was 50/50 on whether i was moving house, and so i asked telewest what would happen if i did move, and they explained that they would transfer my account over to my new house, or if they couldn't provide the service, then they cancel their contract with me (no charge).

However, i am now definately moving, have checked to see if my new house is in a telwest area, and it isn't. They now tell me i have to pay the rest of the 12 month contract (which is about 10months). This is a joke. I woulodn't have considered signing up for it if i had known they would do this. Is there anything i can do? Is this actually the case, or have i got a dodgy customer service guy telling me wrong stuff (which i think we all know wouldn't be the 1st time its ever happened)

If you search the forums you will find that the policy has now changed and you either have to take the ADSL or pay off your contract.
