Wireless Network Please Help!

Hi guys and girls, first post here so please be gentle! I have just ordered NTL Broadband 1MB. Now they are coming on Wed 27th April to install it. Here is my problem. They are installing the modem on the PC downstairs. I have a PC upstairs in my room, with my xbox. Now due to reasons, i cannot have wires trailing through the house or through walls and ceilings. So i need a wireless connection. I have been searching on so many sites for hubs, routers, apadters, and to be honest I am getting really bogged down, So I am asking for your help. What hardware can you recommend me (I have one PC downstairs, where the modem will be (SACM) and one PC upstairs and my xbox) Thanks for your help in advance, Ellis

Lightbulb Re: Wireless Network Please Help!

1) to the site.

2) Loads of wireless/XBOX info here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=16296 & http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=1342

Basically, get yourself a wireless router (& an ethernet bridge for your XBOX), follow the guides we have put up, & away you go!

[Edit]-Regarding hardware recommendations, a 54G Wireless Cable Router (make sure it's not an ADSL Modem/Router ) from either Belkin, Linksys or Netgear will do you just fine (I would recommend Belkin kit personally), but if you have a browse of the Computers & I.T forum you'll find loads of questions and answers about all the routers that are available.

Re: Wireless Network Please Help!

Linksys do a nice line the WRT54G is a good router and brainless to set up on NTL, they also do a Wireless G Gaming Adaptor to link the XBox to the router.

I've heard good things about that router, I can also personally vouch for the Belkin 802.11g cable router (Can't remember the model number!), the PCI cards and USB adaptors are fine too.

Slightly off topic... there's no chance the information from that wireless thread could be tidied up / updated a bit and put in the knowledge base, is there?

Re: Wireless Network Please Help!

Just dont use your microwave while using the wireless devices

Cant beat hardwire, its faster superior and more secure.

Wireless was really designed for temporary connections not permanent links.

Re: Wireless Network Please Help!

I purchased ours from PCWorld - which meant paying probably £20 more than in a discount shop - because I knew I wouldnt have any problems taking it back. I ended up taking it back twice - it was a Belkin and eventually replacing with Linksys. I expect small shops might have quibled and argued that it needed to be tested before they gave me an exchange - pcworld allowed me to choose another make.

It depends on the pcworld though as the one in Stockport wasnt like that when my dvd writer wouldnt work.
