Ntl email & WinXP

I've recently upgraded to win xp, I'm having a problem with ntl email. The messages (ie: spam...) are getting through to my account, but when I send one nothing is happening. My AVG scanner returns the following:

This is the AVG E-mail Scanner program.

I'm sorry to have to inform you that the message returned
below could not be delivered to one or more destinations.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Cannot open smtp connection to '62.253.162.50'
Connect: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. (10060)

I suspect this might be a problem with the smtp. I've had to change my internet access proxy as Yahoo couldn't cope with it. I've tried the same proxy for the ntl add but it still won't send.

Any ideas most welcome - thanks.
