Win 2000 problems, help please?

Hi
I have a question about Win 2000 recently on my PC it has started hanging on shut dwon, so I click shut down and nothing happens but nothing responds. The only way to turn the PC off is at the mains!
It also seems very slow on start up, even though I only have 5 start up items.
Next when I try to use disk cleanup it hangs at about 3% and does not move, although this program works fine on my other drive!?
This all started two weeks ago.
Ive searched the net and this does not seem a common problem, everything else works fine. Ive tried adware, spybot, virus checkers and registry checkers to and all report nothing.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

If it's slow to shutdown then the odds are it will be slow to start up as it will be running background checks to make sure nothing is damaged.
Have you got many applications and services running in the background and if so have you tried closing them down before trying to get the PC to shutdown.
This could be anything from an application not shutting down properly through to hardware not responding unfortunately

Have you checked if you need to defrag your drives? I'd also scan them to check for hardware failure.

Your first port of call should be the system logs - that's what they're for.
To check them:
go to START>RUN and type in the following: compmgmt.msc
this will open the computer management console.
At the the top it says "event viewer", have a look at the system and application logs (you might want to clear them by right clicking on it and click on "clear all events" - saying no to saving first. This will give you a clear log, and make things easier to view.
Then do a restart - and see what the logs say.
Win2k should now be on SP4 - and all hotfixes (via windows update) should be installed - unless you have a reason not to! (there ARE known issues with like this on 2k), have a look at MS's knowledgebase.
.........or, did something happen 2 weeks ago? install new software/hardware?
