Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

just phoned up VM and have reduced package from 20Mb to 10Mb - see if I can cope with that speed - saves £ 12 per month

my question is - if when I get home tonight I don't unplug the modem for 10 minutes and just carry on using the broadband, will I remain on 20Mb but paying only 10Mb prices?

simply put. CMTS will tell your modem to use a different config. rebooting your modem or not will not make a difference. it's done automatically. downgrades take up to 24 hrs

If your uBr is heavily utilized, then it'll take longer than uBr's which aren't for e.g.

Think I will be doing a similar thing as I don't get 20MB speeds anymore and my deal for 20MB has run out so will try and get another one or will reduce and save money that way

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

If you go upto 20meg, how long do you have to stay on 20meg before you can drop down if you choose that you would like to? The reason being is I considered going to 20meg but wanted to see how 10meg was first. If 10meg (when I get it), is impressive, then I may consider upgrading. But if I then decide I dont want 20, and would like to reduce, am I stuck with 20meg for 12 months or can this be done at any point?

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I think you can switch between the different packages as much as you like

the lady at VM today said if I wanted, I could go back up to 20Mb again, if I didn't like 10Mb

but downloading from newsgroups now - and getting a solid 10Mb (until STM kicks in anyway)

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Well I read on the site when I was upgrading you must stick with it for 2 months before downgrading (it makes sense to let you go back up straight away as its more money for them).

But I was told the server upgrade isnt for 2 months in my area, so will trial 20meg then drop to 10 if I dont find use for 20meg...although it is rapid...

Just to let all you guys waiting for the Winnersh upgrade know, that at least its started. Im in High Wycombe, which falls under the 'Reading Area - Winnersh'. I was getting significant packet loss yesterday evening so I rebooted the modem and voila, I was upgraded to the 10Mbit connection.

Havant, Hampshire, PO9 here.

Went from 4Mb up to 10Mb a week or so back, but its been sluggish today - speedtest.net shows it running about 3.4Mb at the moment.

Anyone in the Cosham area with similar slowdown?

Im in portsmouth, (on cosham ubr) on 10meg, gettin speeds of ~280KB/s from virgin gamefiles so i guess theres something up in the area. Pings to gameservers are fine tho.

*edit* Just realised i may be stm'ed up is at 12KB/s and down is around 75% of 10meg

Any ideas on when Bradford is getting upgraded?

Also when does the STM kick in on a day?

Well, that would be good news. Newton Abbot is normally near the end as it serves up such a large amount of people and the links to Plymouth use the old Eurobell system, from what I can remember. Well, lets see :P
