The number of single-sex state schools has fallen from nearly 2,500 to just over 400 in 40 years.
In England there are 183 boys-only state secondary schools and 229 girls-only ones. In Scotland there are only two state-funded all-girls schools and none for boys.

Re: School forces girls to wear head scarves
Oh why the hell we can't just have secular schools and those who want their children to learn about the family religion take classes after the state has had the students for the day...It's how Muslims,Hindus,Sikhs,Jews have managed in this Christian based country for generations.Lets take all faiths including Christianity out of schools and just keep it simple.
The only concession I'd make is that there would be a lesson and exam (compulsary) on each and every faith in the world just so everyone learns about the basics of everyone's faiths and it would be part of the PHSE syllabus.
I'm sorry for any RE teachers but you're out...

Could children be excused if their parents object?

Nope! It would be a required part of the citizenship syllabus. If they have to know how party politics work and all about the structure of government then they can learn about the people who live here of differing cultures and faiths.

Re: School forces girls to wear head scarves
"School forces girls to wear head scarves..." - I think all schools should force girls to wear longer skirts. It's indecent some of the 'outfits' I've seen - you're going to school, not a catwalk?!

Re: School forces girls to wear head scarves
Wonder what would happen though if a school decided that it would ban head scarfs from being worn as it is not school uniform then? The local school by me is CoE and connected with the local church. There are some muslim children who attend (school has a reputation for high standars of teaching and there are more parents who want to send their children there than places aailable) and the school allows the girls to wear a headscarf. Now, as this is not a part of the school uniform, can I take it from the comments posted on here that it is therefore not a problem for the school to ban children from wearing them?

Ok this is what I think and this is just my personal opinion.
If I was Catholic I would want my son to go to a catholic school and if the uniform had a cross on it so be it
If I was Jewish I would want him to go to a Jewish school and wear the skull cap etc.
If I was Muslim I would want him to go to a Muslim school and wear traditional dress (sorry I am not well informed enough to know what boys wear)
If I did not want my son to wear anything with a religious symbol or a skull cap etc then I would not send him to a "faith" school, problem solved.
Or am I just trying to live in a world that makes sense?
As for all the girls at the school mentioned in Salus opening post being made to wear scarves are they going to make all the boys wear skull caps or turbans and every single person must wear a cross so as not to offend anyone?
I believe in live and let live as long as no one is being hurt but it seems that we are no longer allowed to do that because no matter what anyone does someone some were is offended
Ok rip me to shreds I wont cry too much

Now this post makes a world of sense
A common sense post that is sadly lacking in some of the posts in this thread.
Rep on the way

i'm struggling to find the stats but it would seem there is only one all girl muslim secondary - near you in fact. Feversham in Bradford. There seems to be about 100 independent Muslim faith schools all told. Still looking for state ones.
edit - of those 100 schools, five receive state funding.

Re: School forces girls to wear head scarves
I have to post this, as I am almost outraged at some peoples flippant comments about 'if you don't like it put your child in another school'... I can only assume that those of you that have said that don't have children (at all, or of school age)...It's not that bloody simple. There may only be one school in your catchment area, or if there is more than one, there still may be no space in your preferred option, and there's no other choice (apart from moving house to be in the right catchment, which isn't always possible in the real world.....). All the bloody fuss that was made a few months ago in the news about a school asking a muslim girl NOT to wear her scarf, and now this? FFS. .
