Re: [Merged] - Football talk
i don't think Sven has done anything at all.. He's just basically picked the same players we had before.. we haven't got any more drive, direction or technical skill than we had before he took over.. just look at how many rubbish performances we have put in.. Australia and Sweden to name a few.. yes these were friendlies but we should still be beating those sides..
Look at the rubbish players he picks Phil Neville, Heskey and Rickets being prime examples.. he just basically reads the Sun and then picks the team say think we should play with..
If we were playing better football or doing new things at set plays etc it would e ok but we just the same as when he started..

In all fairness Russ, Svens record in competitive matches is still very good (I think that the World Cup quarter final is still the only defeat). However, as an England fan, I have to be honest and say that I wish he would stop faffing about with the team in friendlies †“ itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s a good idea to use new players / those on the periphery of the team but, other than that stick to the core team and work around those players he knows he will want in Championships etc (barring injury etc)

You're missing the point - I'm not saying he's a rubbish manager. I'm asking if he's done anything which marks him out amongst other top-level managers. When the Man United job looked like it was available, his name was pushed forward. He's constantly linked with Chelsea - I'm asking why, seeing as he has not done anything which makes him any better than any other manager of that level.
Consider his record against previous England managers - I see nothing which stands out.

Re: [Merged] - Football talk
yes agree about faffing about in friendlies.. the sweden match was a prime example.. i knew as soon as i say the team that we would play sh*te.. everyone had been talking about playing Thomspon on the left and as usual Sven went with what press said but he played him in a team with about 8 other changes as well so he couldn't see how well he would perform with the proper side that would start in Euro 04..
I can only name one player he has actually brought into the England side who wasn't there when it took over and is Lampard and that's more because he's a classy player than anything Sven has done..

A manager needs a good team. I think he has a good record considering the team and he has past experience at lazio and such

Sorry mate - just proves I am a !
I seem to remember that he has been moderately successful, both in Sweden and Italy. However, I do see your point - I think that the reason that he's continually linked with the top jobs like Man U and Chelsea is because he is quite experienced at that level (ie clubs who are consistently challenging for honours) and because, in the grand scheme of things, I think some clubs and the media believe that it would be easier to entice Sven away from the England job (particularly as his contract was due to expire after Euro 2004 and he has made it clear that he doesnââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t like not being involved in day to day management) than somebody like Martin Oâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢Neill from Celtic.

But is his record any better or worse than previous managers? And I'm not talking about club level

I'd say that's probably the only reason - his England record is nothing outstanding.

Re: [Merged] - Football talk
I can't understand Chelsea seemingly wanting to get rid of Claudio Ranieri, he is one of the few gentlemen left in the game, plus Chelsea are doing quite well.
Very strange indeed !!!!

We have certainly got a better match record. Apart from that hes only been in one cup with england and that was the World cup in which we did reasonably well. Sure we didn't win but we lost to brazil (and put up a good performance) who are a great side.
Top 8 finish is also fair enough considering our team we are certainly not in the top 5 of the world. For a first try he did very well. We need consistency in our managers so I think we should stick with him until the next world cup

But don't England always go out at the quarter-final stage, assuming they get there?
He took your team one step further.
Not quite what I'd call outstanding. And a better match record? Considering the quality of opposition, I'd say the only memorable game was against a below-par Germany in 2001.

Re: [Merged] - Football talk
Well theres nothing that makes him 'stand out' other than his experience at club level. But I fail to see your point about him 'not standing out at england' because thats not why he is in the frame
