Your not getting ripped off at all though really, have ntl not just upgraded you to 3mb for the same money that you where paying before just like they'll not be holding their hand out for more when they upgrade you to 10mb for free when its possible to do it.
Ntl will be doing this upgrade when it's feasible to do, thereââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s more than just banging a bit of extra kit into the exchange to be done. bb will have to develop the 10mb config file, that will have to be tested to make sure it does not kill modems. They'll have to do reports to see what equipment (cm's) will need changing and then manage to get it changed before it upgraded. This clearly is not going to happen overnight. Fair play to ntl as they are improving all products at the same time (except phones , thereââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s not much you can do with them).
Lets not forget where we have come from its not long ago if you wanted a 128k connection you had to fork out mega ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£ÃƒÆ ’‚£ for a ISDN line.
And Britain is still very new with HFC cable networks compared to the US and Canada.
Bill don't let them get to you, If they really where that hacked off they could always go to bulldog (snigger).

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase
With everyone moaning about Tw getting upgraded before NTL, if you look at their price tarrif their users pay more money for their service than we do on NTL. As the two are merging soon will they get reduced prices & the same service as us with the cap or will we have to pay more & get the same service as them uncapped. I guess we will have more People complaining than that. Personally i would prefer an uncapped reliable service running at 2mb than a 10mb capped.

The thing that worries me, once again, NTL announce moving to 10mbit when their actual 3mbit service isnt even up to scratch ! :|

Ask him to do it in 6 months time and it will likely be lower.

I will use my connection...either downloadin demo's and stuff or playing online. I want more upload the most though to play xbox live with the least lag. I find my severs crash if alot of people come in due to low upload speeds.

Point is publicity, isp's are in a race at the moment to say they are the fastest.

This also worries me, 2mbit is even struggling to sustain max throughput.

But is that a problem with your setup, the hosts that you connect to, networks beyond NTL's or NTL's infrastructure?

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase
I done some fairly extensive tests, and my opinion it is not.
steadfast networks in the usa goes over level3 from my connection and alos uses level3 from nildram, nildram gets a sustained 2mbit whilst mine is flaky, the server it self is a dedicated 100mbit.
There are numerous eu servers I have posted about before in other threads.
The only thing I will say is if I download from within the uk the speed is pretty much always max, also if I download over http providing the proxy isnt bailing out on me the speed again is usually good, so to me it looks like peering within the uk is good, ntl's internal network is good but peering outside the uk is shaky especially with cogent.

You can't get 380kb/s on 3mb.

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase
Interesting that the following has just been posted in a place I use:
"Coming Soon - more speed at no extra cost
Soon we will be increasing your download speed from 2Mb to up to 10Mb, and increasing your upload speed from 256k to up to 384k, all at no extra cost to you.
Your service will remain completely unlimited, so you don't have to worry about how much you use the Internet or the amount you download.
The new speeds will be rolled out region by region from the end of September until early 2006.
You will not need to do anything, the changes will happen automatically, and we will contact you to let you know when you can start to benefit from your new speed."
Telewest customer who received this today......

Yay another person that does not understand networking.
ok 3mbit = 3000 bits.
8 bits make a byte so 3000/8 = 375kb/s
Now thats the speed its capable if it was possible to simply pipe data in. Its not that simple because the 2 computers have to have a conversation about the data transmission in order for it to happen. Its this overhead data that drops your connection down in speed so 330kb/s is your connection operating at damn near perfect. Thats not even factoring in things at that end. I have a 288k upload (ADSL) which allows me to upload in theory 32kb/s but in practice its 29 kb/s now thats divided up between the amount of people i send the files to so 2 people would get 14kb's each and so on.
You could expect around 1040-1050 kb/s I reckon on a 10mb connection and thats with perfect conditions
I'd also like to add that I may be slightly out on the calculations but they are approximatly right. You certainly cannot get 380kb/s on a 3mb connection.

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase
Have you tried a proper speed test as you cannot always get the correct speed from the transfer dialog box. Try the speed test on the forum front page for a more reliable speed test.

So which one is it ? or did you save that picture for later just in case you had this conversation
Speedtest
Fri, 23 Sep 2005 07:32:29 UTC
1st 128K took 359 ms = 365103 Bytes/sec = approx 3038 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 359 ms = 365103 Bytes/sec = approx 3038 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 360 ms = 364089 Bytes/sec = approx 3029 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 344 ms = 381023 Bytes/sec = approx 3170 kbits/sec
3 meg service
