Well most server based services use an authenticated request system. A user requests access to certain data, the access priviledges are authenticated and the data sent. If Google isn't authenticating anymore computers or users then I suppose this error will occur for people until Google start authenticating new users again so that they are allowed access to the data.

Why buy plus?

In addition to the basic features, Google Earth Plus includes:

* GPS integration †“ read tracks and waypoints from your GPS.
* Higher resolution printing (greater than screen resolution).
* Customer support via email (not just web).
* Annotation †“ adds draw/sketch tools for richer annotations (can be shared as KML).
* Data importer †“ read address points from .csv files.
http://earth.google.com/earth_pro.html $400

Features

* Sophisticated streaming technology delivers the data to you as you need it.
* Imagery and 3D data depict the entire earth - Terabytes of aerial and satellite imagery depict cities around the world in high-resolution detail.
* Local search lets you search for restaurants, hotels, and even driving directions. Results show in your 3D earth view. Easy to layer multiple searches, save results to folders, and share with others.
* Layers show parks, schools, hospitals, airports, retail, and more.
* Overlays †“ import site plans, design sketches and even scanned blueprints.
* Annotate the view with lines and polygons.
* Data import - ingest up to 2000 locations by address or lat/lon.
* KML †“ data exchange format let your share useful annotations.

How are they authenticating new users without requiring any kind of sign-up? Is the app somehow enabled by Google the first time it connects?

If so, you lot who can't get on are unlucky, my dad signed onto it this afternoon for the first time and it let him on alright. He had to download the installer from an alternative location mind, as Gooooooogle have shut theirs down ... perhaps their switching off authentication is to prevent people flooding the service after acquiring the installer over BitTorrent or whatever.

If you subscribe then obviously it has to know what service you are subscribed to, so I suppose it initially checks to see if you are subscribed to any paid service before it loads up any data or images.
Also I think the first time you run Google Earth it heads to the server to download certain data to enable the software to run (server locations, basic primary maps and images), if you don't have this basic data on your PC it can't then access any further information. The initial file size when you download Google Earth is about 10Mb but as soon as you access any point on the globe it immediately starts streaming image data to your PC..... lots of data lol
Oh and the $400 subscription is a commercial service and those figures are annual fees too.

Re: Google Earth?

Still no luck getting onto it, I bet the non-paying users get much lower importance on the servers so can see subscribing as a must have.

Re: Google Earth?

I'm going to persevere with it for a little while.....and then uninstall it

I'm getting really into the things that Google can do at the moment, frankly some of it is quite stunning.

I'm looking into ways to use the Google Maps API in order to try and take my "Cable Forum Map" project forward - it all looks a bit mind boggling though so it could take a while
