By the time some of you end up getting it you could have phoned up, recontracted and be out of contract again by the time you would get it automatically anyway lol.

In any list there are the people in the front, those in the middle and those at the end. A sense of proportion rather than throwing girly strops at not being first would be awesome. Even 120Mb is still way faster than most can purchase.

And as long as you're at the front everything is hunky dory eh?

I can't get VM; prior to an FTTC campaign that lasted the best part of 2 years I was on a service that fluctuated between 0.5 and 1.5Mb/s.

When I could get VM my area, Mortlake, was pretty much last to get upgrades due to the network there being in need of overbuild. Looking at the upload upgrades I see poor brow-beaten Barry was already upgraded in the 7th February 2011 schedule, as indeed were Swansea, St Mellons and Cwmbran, in fact they were among the first areas to be done, with Newport East done as of early February. Newport West and Cwmbwrla, the stragglers, were due by July 2011.

The affluent suburb of South-West London I lived in didn't receive the upgrade until over a year later than most of Wales and 6 months after the last areas to be upgraded in the country.

Silly facts; they do tend to get in the way of a good self-pitying rant.

You cite Cities (millions of potential customers) against some little place that only Wikipedia has heard of (population, a postman and a man walking a dog).

A business planner is obviously going to prioritise for maximum custom. Of course, once the regular payers are signed up in their millions, you can re-prioritise, and as far as upgrades go, that's what has happened imo.

Affluence is not a qualification for priority. More customers will be secured from a new build estate than from 3-4 affluent residences fronting the river don't you think?

Btw, the 'facts' you mention might have been valid if we were discussing this in 2011. Unfortunately, it is 2014. The only silly thing is quoting them. Will you be mentioning what happened in the war next?

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

I find it hilarious that you casually dismissed an area of Wales being literally first in the queue for a long period of time, but the minute its no longer first and forefront you are on the fringes of waging civil war. Ridiculously hypocritical given your point about the United Kingdom not being united.

Before you split your sides remember as they say a week is a long time in politics; quoting 3 year old figures is a comparative lifetime.

You think the UK is united?

VM's network construction to new builds and the uplift programmes are two completely different things.

The Mortlake hubsite serves the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames pretty much - population ~188,000.

Croydon hubsite was actually completed after Mortlake, population 365,000 and it serves properties outside the borough too.

Both have quite high population density because, well, they're in London. Many of the larger houses in Twickenham, etc, have been converted to flats, houses are tightly packed due to the cost of land and of course Croydon is infamous for apartments.

They were done late because, as I said, their networks needed overbuilding. Nothing to do with population, nothing to do with customer density, they needed extra work so were left until last along with Hawkfield, South Gyle and others. Nothing more.

The exact same criteria hold true now. Barry needs more work before it's ready to go with the new speeds as an all-tier uplift, so it has to wait a bit longer. No discrimination, no sudden hatred from VM / LGI for Wales, the upgrade programme there isn't done yet so the uplift hasn't done.

Because Mortlake and Croydon, as part of the 10:1 upstream upgrade, have been rebuilt recently VM were in a position to give them the upgrades earlier this time around, and have done so.

The order may change, the criteria haven't. Barry was getting it early because the people who originally built the network built it to a high standard, hence VM and before that ntl were able to release upgrades early as the 'leg work' had already been done. The fibre optic node sizes were small, capacity upgrades were relatively easy. Exactly the same situation that there is with Mortlake and Croydon now, shiny freshly overbuilt network so easier to upgrade.

Your arguments seem to fail on all levels. If we're talking about all these potential customers do you know how many uBRs / CMTS Virgin Media have serving the entire Barry hubsite? Must be tons right given they appear to have been prioritising it?

Four:

Name: bary-cmts-04.network.virginmedia.net
Address: 82.13.60.83

Carrying on with the hubsites in Wales that were all done a year before Mortlake -

Swansea - four:

Name: swan-cmts-04.network.virginmedia.net
Address: 82.13.60.113

Cwmbran - three:

Name: cwbn-cmts-03.network.virginmedia.net
Address: 82.13.60.95

St Mellons - three:

Name: stme-cmts-03.network.virginmedia.net
Address: 82.13.60.141

Newport East - five:

Name: new2-cmts-05.network.virginmedia.net
Address: 82.13.60.96

The population of a postie and a man walking a dog in Mortlake seem to require six of them.

Name: mort-cmts-06.network.virginmedia.net
Address: 82.7.206.183

That lightly populated backside of nowhere Croydon, it must not even have a man walking a dog given VM left it until even later than Mortlake, with April 2012, twenty three.

Name: croy-cmts-23.network.virginmedia.net
Address: 82.7.207.240

Also late to the party, not done until April 2012 was South Gyle:

Name: sgyl-cmts-36.network.virginmedia.net
Address: 82.7.207.15

You can't even say that it's the reverse where smaller sites were done before larger ones; Newport East, with its 5 CMTS was done before Newport West with its 4 and Cwmbwrla with its 8.

So clearly VM do have some whacky ideas or some really messed up prejudices. They release an upgrade and in your world prioritise Wales in order to leave 2 hubsites which, between them, cover more customers than the whole of VM's network in Wales until last, then release a further uplift a little later on and intentionally decide to leave specific parts of Wales behind out of spite or nationalism.

Or there were legitimate engineering reasons for doing so.

Sorry, couldn't find a tin foil hat with any reference to anything Welsh on it, I hope this foil balloon will do.

Has anyone who's area has 'officially' been upgraded got any extra channels or dare I say it... 64 QAM?

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

@ Gobble (great handle!)

Your question may be difficult to answer. My area was upgraded last Autumn for 120 meg with 8 down (I already had 2 up from the 100 meg service).

Earlier this year, the circuit glitch and lo, we had four upstreams on the line card (was three) from which I was provisioned with two, still at 16QAM.

As far as I know, the work being done now is of a resegmentation nature as well as the noise clean up ready for 64QAM. I don't expect an improvement on 10:1 and I'm not exactly sure how VM will use the extra upstream capacity bearing in mind that my area has no upstream congestion, only downstream congestion at peak times.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

I have the 2 up (16QAM), but still on 6 down and during peak hours my speed will drop somewhat, but I think that will be solved once I get the extra 2 channels in (hopefully), but my official upgrade is now sometime after July, so will just have to wait and see.

If someone was on 6 and the area has been officially done according to the site, would be nice to know if yours changed.

Maybe, maybe not. When we went from 6 to 8 DS channels, I was on 100 meg and was getting that most of the time - perhaps 80 meg evenings. When we were suddenly bumped to 120/12 from 100/10, the 80 meg evenings remained.

It's degraded to 8 meg evenings now either because they've added more customers (it doesn't take much to tip the thing into the red) or they've temporarily swung customers onto our line card while they upgrade UBRs or whatever.

They tell us nothng. So you can expect anything to happen!
