So 2mb users, how much are you gonna download tomorrow

You may want/need the higher upload speed that 10Mbps gives but don't need much total traffic per month.

In other countries it all depends on how the higher speeds are delivered and the topography of the country. If you have large cities consisting of high rise apartments it can be fairly easy to cheaply cable them up using either DSL or cable technology. Far cheaper and easier than digging up hundreds of miles of roads in the UK. Cable in the UK is limited by its current infrastructure. It could be upgraded significantly but who is prepared to pay the costs of such upgrades? Many people already complain that the prices are too high in the UK and would be unwilling to pay more but someone has to pay the cost of massive upgrades if they want substantially faster services.

The other point about services in other countries is that comparing prices between them and the UK isn't just a matter of using exchange rate conversions. Someone overseas may only pay the equivalent of £10 per month for their service but that is a lot if you only earn £50 per month.

I have finally got a notice with my latest bill about the unlimited downloads from January and about the provision of 10 MB BB.And it's only January 3rd.It's been a long time since I actually got informed about anything ny ntl apart from what I owe them at the actual time it is happening.

How much do you reckon is reasonable? I just want to catch up on some TV torrents- and so my useage could be up to 3Gig+ per day over next few days (though I seriously doubt it will be that high...)

reasonable to me would be 24/7 - its unlimited, if they didn't want you to download 24/7 they wouldn't have put unlimited on the 2meg tier and kept it at 512k or 1meg only. Anyway if NTL deem it not reasonable you will probably get a letter 1st advising usage, and if you don't then you could agrue the case that you stayed on 2meg of whatever as you heard it was unlimited here at cable forums or via your billing letter about unlimited connections (if they sent you one) so until then don't worry about it, 3gigs a day isn't going to kill the network i wouldn't of thought.

Reasonable might well be what they were considering reasonable last month. Dont assume you can download 600gig every month and nothing will happen, isp's will usually have a clause covering the line been raped usually something like causing degrading service to others. The unlimited word will give them a big boost to marketing once their website etc. is updated and give customers some peace of mind tho.

So basically what you are saying is that it isnt unlimited? It still has a cap, but its just a lot higher then the original one?

Its stupid, ISP's say its unlimited, then you use it as unlimited and they get in a big mood with you

Anyone else thinking that giving the bottom tiers unlimited downloads was Plan B - instead of moving everyone up to 10MB, which was the original plan.

I don't think NTL anticipated all the grief they got with moving the 3MB users up to 10MB.

I personally prefer 2M Unlimited instead of 10M with a 75M cap.
I don't have to use netmeter anymore and worry each month that I am going to get a letter from NTL, at the same time I cannot imagine why would I need 10M speed.
I am really grateful to NTL for this move. There are not many ISPs out there who honestly provide 2000/200 for 25 quid without a cap and not throttling your p2p and news server traffic at the same time.

There may not be a cap but that doesn't mean that there will be no traffic shaping.
