It isn't so much the headline speed that is an issue, it is the fact that two of the most popular web sites don't work on Virgin.

Saying they "don't work" is so exaggerated it's verging on bull. While both Youtube and VM have their share of problems, it works fine for most people most of the time. No website or ISP is 100% perfect 100% of the time. It works better on VM than most other ISPs.
