Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

I've been doing the 5:2 diet since mid January (with one week missed as I was away) so far 10lbs off and on my non fasting days it's really had a positive on my appetite.

As exercise is difficult with the RA (and some of the meds don't help on weight side of things) I'm really pleased how its going. It may be a combination of the weight loss and the diet but RA seems to be behaving a lot better too.

Keep up the great work folks

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

Got my brave pills out and ventured to the east end of Glasgow, which until now was a place i was only familiar with for non-recreational reasons, for the new Tollcross parkrun.

Ooft! The toughest of tough courses, with hills crammed into every meter of the 5k. Still not a bad wee event and continuing my parkrun tourism in a fortnight with a trip down into Ayrshire and deepest, darkest banjo country.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

Has anyone had shin splints on here and found a cure? I really need your help badly please. I've not got problems breathing wise, I can go further jogging but my lower legs are stopping me. i am stretching and ive changed footwear but the pain isnt going away. that said as my stamina increases by going daily regardless i am able to push a little further than i could say a few days ago. heres where it hurts badly (not my legs)

if i relax my legs fully the whole lower part kills so im mentally focusing on my upper body if that makes sense to ease the pain.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

I've currently got shin splints - the only sure way to treat them is complete rest from any impact other than walking. If like me the thought of no exercise at all feels impossible then you can do things like swimming. I go to my local gym and use the cross trainer which is ideal for having no-impact exercise.

Make sure you get your gait checked to ensure your training shoes are suitable and that you don't over-pronate.

After about 6 weeks you should be feeling better.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

OK that's not good - several physios have told me that if you get the shin splint pain while resting (or anything as well as running) then it's most likely a stress fracture. Get along to your local NHS physio before doing any further exercise. It's generally treated the same way but you might need specialist advice.

Most specialist running shops will check your gait, some charge for it (then deduct the amount from the price of any shoes you buy) but I always go to my local Go Outdoors, they do it for free.

Compression socks 'can' help but they tend to just mask the problem. They can get you through a race but should only be used as a part of rehabbing your leg. Once your 6 weeks of rest is up it's a good idea to use them then but run (or whatever) at a much slower pace and less distance for the first 2 to 3 weeks as you build back up.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

An update on shin splints. I spoke to a friend who knows a physio and was told to do some additional ankle stretches and some weird looking actions during running when the pain appears. I was basically told to open up my ankle, I was too tense. I havent yet called the doc because the physio advice is working so far.

Does anyone know if theres a watch or something along the lines that you can strap to your body and it calculates distance run ?

A quick Google came up with these, maybe there is something good there.

iPod nano has that Nike fitness stuff built-in if you fancy paying 20 quid for the sensor. There are loads of ios and Android apps (Runkeeper. iRace etc.) if you fancy carting your phone around.

One of the exercises I was given for shinsplints was to put a training pole on the floor about 3 feet in front of you then hop over it and back with alternating feet first.

endomondo.com is a free app for most phones. There is a version you can pay for but the free one is fine for reporting distance and speed and also breaks it down by kilometre or mile. You also get a breakdown of fastest 1km, 1 mile, 3 miles...etc and average pace etc.

I tend to keep some music on my phone and use that both as a sports tracker and mp3 player.
