SD Picture Quality TIVO

Following the recent update, has anyone noticed any improvement in PQ on SD content - update went through yesterday for me - and it still looks very soft on ITV, C4 on SD content to me, any views from anyone on it ?

Re: SD Picture Quality TIVO

I had the 15.2 software from install (I live in a test area) and I did, at first, think the picture was a little soft. However, I don't notice it at all now except when I remind myself to have a look and on those occasions I'd say it was more 'film-like' than soft (hard to describe what I mean, but perhaps 'less harsh' is a better description).

I also notice that I have far less artifacts than I used to on some channels when using my old V+.

Mind you, I bought my Sharp Aquos P50E a few years ago specifically because it had a great SD picture as well as a great HD one, so I may not be seeing what a lot of people see when it comes to softness.

Re: TiVo Picture Quality

I've tried V HD, V+ HD and TiVo now and they all had one thing in common - when connected via HDMI the Sharpness control on the TV needed turning up. Unlike my PC, where the HDMI out is naturally very sharp and required less Sharpness on the TV.

Also make sure you're not relying on auto-detect to get the right resolution. I had to set my TiVo to use 1080i manually, and was sure to deselect the other modes so it never "falls back" to 576p or something.

I can't say i see any improvement on SD picture with the 15.2 update, it still looks soft fuzzy and crap.

can't see any difference to be honest and we have a Samsung 42 inch plasma. The picture quality was fine before for SD viewing. I'm just happy the TiVo has remember the 1080i setting when it resumes from out of stand by.

Re: TiVo Picture Quality

I have a 50" Panasonic, the SD is still poor.
Although I think this maybe because we are now used to mainly viewing HD

Re: TiVo Picture Quality

A few years ago I remember splashing out on a shiny new Sony Bravia HD TV to go with my V+ HD box and thinking what’s the fuss about HD because it’s nothing special compared to the SD pictures delivered by the V+. Then came the TiVo box and the picture was so bad you couldn’t stomach to watch anything other than HD.

It was pointed out over on Virgin’s forum that one of the picture problems was due to TiVo having interlacing problems (clearly shown by Jayceef1 pictures http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...ht/true/page/9 )

Since the update I have to agree, whilst I do believe that the picture quality has risen slightly on SD it’s still not that great but the interlacing trouble has been corrected and the picture quality on HD is crystal.

I’ve had the TiVo for over 9 months now and it’s a hard road being an early adopter. Slow + buggy and poor, poor picture has been a struggle but since the 15.2 update I can now whole heartedly recommend this box to everyone.

The V+ was no angel, over the years I went through 5 of them starting with a SA then 3 Samsung’s then back to SA. Losing hours of recordings on each and every exchange, many of the things that posters on this forum are crying out for certainly weren’t features on the early boxes they too benefitted from updates. (apart from red button and reminders!)

I’ve got a bit of speed now and as long as Virgin & TiVo keep working on it,
this PVR has a chance of being the best thing since sliced bread!

The general consensus is that on anything less than 32" TVs it can be harder to tell, that the TiVo is slightly worse upscaling SD than the V+ but HD is nearly identical. Though with the 15.2 upgrade that could be negated now... unless you had them side by side I don't think you'd be able to tell much difference, to be honest, even if you were really looking.

I see no difference, and have both, outputting to the same model TV, with the same settings. I have noticed no change since the update.
