Re: Legal action taken against Virgin Media throttling practices

Is this old chestnut still attracting comments?

The 'unlimited' description afaik refers to access, not speed - VM do not prevent people down/up loading, they do limit the speeds during 'peak' times if the published limits are exceeded, though.

Personally I have never been penalised for downloading hundreds of GB of files during the 'off peak' times - at full speed.

Anyone who actually wants to download/upload any significant quantity of data who can't schedule their requirements to fit the STM protocols aren't really serious about what they 'need', imo.

- I always think it is analogous to drivers knowing a speed camera is there, refusing to slow down, then whining when they get fined - the way some people 'go on' you'd think they need to buy a new 1TB drive every day to store the downloads - get real ...

Not a bad analogy at all.

However speed during on or off peak periods isn't the only issue here and people stuck in a mindset about traffic management and shaping should be mindful that, extending the discussion beyond ISP applied limitations in relation to bandwidth usage, nobody should whine / be surprised when they get disconnected or / and fined for breaking the law in relation to copyright infringement when they know they're breaking the law.
