this is why i put IMO, as its my experience, im not saying this goes for everyone, but for me, cable has been best and im not going back to adsl for anybody as ive only ever had bad experiences with it.
even during peak hours im getting the speeds i pay for, i just have to make sure i dont over do it on the downloads during this time so i escape the speed caps.
and about phorm, i use firefox and have the dephormation plug ins so that doesnt worry me either.

The upgrade page was updated on Wednesday. Just noticed that the Brentwood area has been upgraded, rebooted my modem and have 8.5mb now; can't complain

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
There seems to be some people who think they have got a great deal with having there speed upgraded over the years and not having to pay more and that this 4Mb to 10 Mb is a 'free upgrade', well it's not free and you should expect the speed to increase. My monthly payment is paying for not just the present infrastructure at VM but also the upgrades they are doing. Now if I went out today and bought a new CPU for say £75 would I expect it to be the same speed as one bought for £75 several years ago? No of course not and broadband, being in the technology sector, is no different.
I for one want, well need really*, the upgrade and I know what it entails upgrading a network and that VM have to do it right but I'm not happy to be paying the same for less than other people, why should I be happy?
I'm not moaning, there's nothing wrong with moaning mind though I don't see the point in moaning about moaning I'm just expressing my opinion.
*with several computers and consoles all vying for bandwidth at the same time 4Mb isn't so much nowadays

so if you brought a car for £7,000 several years ago
you would expect a better car now at the same price

Yes, and I'd definitely get a better car. In fact it would be very difficult not to, engines are constantly modified and upgraded, safety systems are made safer, extras are made standard, the list goes on - it's progress (though not always )
Just compare a base model, say, VW Golf from 5 years ago and one today - there has been loads of upgrades and modifications done. It's not all a conspiracy when you need spares and they ask they age of the car, they do actually upgrade them . Whether one is better than the other is a different question and only time will tell if VM get this upgrade right or if we'll have loads of problems - I hope it goes well as my connection has always been very good.

Yeah but a car several years ago costing £7000 would have been a top of the range with all the extras, where as for the same money these days it'd be a little commuter car with no optional extras.
In other words what your original comment is totally lacking is inflation.

Top of the range, all extras car for £7000 from several years ago, I think it'd be longer ago than that
OK I didn't state anything about inflation, I was assuming that was obvious and I was talking in relative terms (prices go up, wages go up - it's relative)
The car I drive is 11 years old, it was near the top of the range and cost £28000 at the time (which would be about £40000 today - though I paid nothing like that ) but the model in the same 'near top of range' position now costs about £40000 but technically wise it is far superior to mine.
My car gets me around and a 56k modem will still get you on the web but you wouldn't want to pay the same today as you do for broadband today. In fact I've always paid (relatively) about the same for Internet access, even from back when I had 14.4k

buying a CPU or a car is buying a physical object. When buying broadband access, you are buying a service. I think it is good that that service evolves overtime with upgrades, etc.

It would be more comparable if you were leasing the car. Then you would definitely expect a better car today.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
it depends on the country though, i mean look at south korea with thier 100mb connections, then look at other countries where they still have 512K and pay more than we do for our speeds, i think its the same old human thing, never happy with what we have and always want more, its called greeeeeeeeeeeed
be patient, your upgrade will be done when its done.

The good news:-It would seem I got it today. The not so good:
Your current download speed is: 5.56 Mbps. Can't have it all. It's about what I received when last they gave me a month's "free" update.
|
Just in case anyone is interested, after having a moan on the newsgroup about not getting more than 5.5Mbps, and being asked to connect to the modem direct and carry out various tests,I found that my then router (AT AR220E) was the culprit for reduced downloads.
After replacing it with a D-Link DIR301 I now get near 10Mbps downloads.
I now have a bit of a red face, as when I first tried direct to modem I swear it was no faster.
Whatever, I'm chuffed to death with the new speed. It was well worth the £35 cost of a new router. I'm also pleased with the help from the newsgroup people, (virginmedia.support.broadband.cable). Beats the phone India bit into a cocked hat.
