Are you insane?

The DOCSIS specs say 58dBmV, for QPSK, 55dBmV for 16QAM. Those are absolute max.

Higher certainly isn't better, 42 is no worse than 52.

Not sure what you're doing now but hope it isn't cable modem support. Read http://www.cablemodem.com for specifications, then give it some safety margin and you'll realise how crazy that is.

Well if you would have read I actually admin. and support a Novel and Exchange network for 5000 internal users running Windows XP and NT. I did say cable modems are not my thing and levels do vary from region to region. DOCSIS is not used in my new job. So I have no need to learn anything about it. Kinda pointless

Transmit levels do not vary from area to area on the upstreams. Target receive power might but transmit should not.

I wonder how many people stuck at 58dBmV transmit power (Motorolas can't do 59) didn't have service from your belief that was 'excellent'

Just FYI I don't work with DOCSIS at the moment either. Doesn't mean I can't remember anything about it.

Love the way you got defensive then started giving a perhaps slightly exaggerated view of your resume, a simple 'ooops I was wrong' would have sufficed.

Not slightly exagerated mate. its true. Its what I do. Just because I was a phone monkey for blueyonder for 4 and half years doesnt mean I know nothing. I would of said I was wrong if you didnt start you pointless rant with 'Are you Insane?'. You wanna talk DOCSIS ok ill go away and read the sight for half an hour and then we can talk like gentlemen. You wanna talk what I know go away and study for 2 years and then we can talk.

Call Blueyonder 2nd line and ask them about pwr levels. The recommendations are handed down from network infrastucture. Yer know the guys who know what they are talking about.

What is the deal with forums that when a new guy comes on with a bit of knowledge people have to be total obnoxious ******s? All you simply could of done was say I was incorrect and give a persuasive and intelligent discussion to why. Girls must love you.

Re: 10 Meg Problem With Motorola Modem

Hanns IF you did do support for BY, and didnt roll a tec out for upstreams above 52 then no wonder we had so many complaints..

52 yep well that would pass but 56 or 59. hell they would be lucky to even get online.. and those figures were never, ever, I'l say that once again in case you don't get it, never ever ok..

not just NTL, but because the levels should be between 32 and 52...

yep you can get away with 54.. but if it was the job would not be closed down..

when this first kicked off, I mean high speed inter..

the levels then were over 29 but below 50.. later changed to over 32 and the highest was 52.. not fiction fact...

and I still have the training papers to prove it...

did the course got the tee shirt.......

O by the way you can still see on the network connections if that fault is there..try it and see..
I think its cus the guys there , well some of them dont have the card with that info on it..but thanks anyway...

LOL @ reading up for half an hour and knowing stuff. It takes years of experience to properly know what you're doing with DOCSIS and cable, I'm a relative beginner. People who really know DOCSIS and cable modems make insane amounts of money, as they know RF physics, fibre optics, ethernet and other layer 2 protocols, IP and VoIP.

Personally I regard that as rather more difficult than administering a local area network, which is why DOCSIS people having read the website for half an hour get paid rather a lot more than internal network administrators.

If they gave me that information I'd laugh at them as it's totally wrong. Though what do I know I wrote a high level cable modem troubleshooting guide for ntl

I told you why you were wrong. A little knowledge does a lot of harm when it's wrong. Perhaps I was too strong however your vehemence that it was correct then giving both incorrect values and claiming the higher level the better was a bit scary.

Girls, hey I don't do too badly, although I had to stop that when I got married

By the way again in reference to this reply I did read your post, and responded at 18:27, sadly as you added the 2nd paragraph in an edit at 18:30 and also changed a couple of details in the first paragraph, at a guess having read my response, it was rather difficult for me to read it.

Just to refresh you removed reference to upstream transmit levels being 'Higher the better' and added a bit about how you 'could' be wrong.

This topic I think is degenerating nicely and as Rashid hasn't been back here since his original post I have to feel it's served its' original purpose.

Re: 10 Meg Problem With Motorola Modem

yep hopefully he got sorted but this has been fun..

but now I can see why so many are a little erm fed up with some at BY tec support..

I have only had 1 guy from 2nd line who was a pratt the rest don't seem to bad.. 1st line well not allowed to put my thoughts in print...

as for Hanns well I belive he worked for a support group, prob contracted to BY...

o well never mind someone had to do it...

on another point,
Mr Zolton well think I met him and he suddenly had to rush off...

keep up the good work guys..

You'll have to tell me about that one, in my online dealings with him he's managed to maintain an incredibly high standard of being full of excreta.
