The Libyan regime seems to be cracking down far harder than the other despotic regimes, we in the West have happily previously supported, have been doing this last couple of weeks.
So much for Gadaffi being brought in from the cold. Still, we got some good deals out of it, eh...
Is this really the end for Gadaffi? Where will the revolution spread to next?
And where will the Colonel go if he is forced out? Perhaps Scotland will take him...

re: [Update] UN mandates military intervention in Libya
If if it spreads further then the two that wouldn't suprise me would be Iran and Saudi Arabia although of those two right now i would say Iran first as it has a very organised opposition who have to be taking a lot from current events and belief they can do it must be rising. As for being worried about the so called pro western countries falling i am not really they were never truly pro western just playing the money game and most of them were anything but truly democratic. Democracy is a funny thing and once a people have it they tend to fight quite hard to keep it and make the best of it ertainly in the early decades after that of course you have the complacency that can be seen all across western europe. One thing is for sure interesting and probably disturbing times ahead and my only real hope is that in this period of change not too many have to lose their lives.

Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi has told state TV that Osama Bin Laden and his followers are to blame for the protests wracking his country.
In a phone call from the town of al-Zawiya played live on TV, Col Gaddafi said young people were being duped with drugs and alcohol to take part in "destruction and sabotage".

Oh the irony..

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has told the BBC he was loved by all his people and refused to acknowledge there had been any protests in Tripoli.
Col Gaddafi said that his people would die to protect him.

I think he has completely lost the plot.

re: [Update] UN mandates military intervention in Libya
There was a lot of low-flying activity after dark here last night. And now the BBC's breaking news that our military is ready to move within hours of a UN resolution. I'm wondering whether we've already moved a squadron or two within strike range of Tripoli?

Will that be Dave and his tank? It's about all we have left. Good move scrapping those Harriers wasn't it?

re: [Update] UN mandates military intervention in Libya
In many parts of the world the British military would indeed be scuppered right now, due to the lack of both an aircraft carrier and the planes to fly from one. However in the Med there are plenty of friendly airbases to choose from. Gibraltar springs to mind, although I dont know what the political sensitivities might be down there.

Given the state of our economy and armed forces, what we really need right now is to stay out of other people's countries I'd have thought.

Nah. The people of the country are rebelling but the government are trying to murder them. Screw anything else, we should get their backs.
