Firstly, I never said he should have been sacked. 'Removing' him from his post could equally have applied to putting him on compassionate leave at least until his personal problems had been resolved, possibly even with the counselling you advocate.
And a
suicidal chief constable is not a man or woman I would want in charge of my local police force. He or she simply has too many responsibilities and faces too many pressures especially if also dealing with personal problems. I am very much in favour of depressed and suicidal people being helped, but in the case of public servants,
not at the expense of their public duties.
And I know mental illness is not uncommon.
